Surprising not to see the "can't miss" guard, Chance Warmack on the list. Add to that Jonathan Cooper suffering the same fate as DeCastro last year, and I'd say that we struck gold with Fred plus the extra pick.

Also, anybody find it ridiculous that Keenan Allen is #7 while TWill is #13 with nearly identical stats? What gives there? More anti-Cowboys bias?

probably because he is essentially the #1 on their team

Draft would have been perfect had we taken LeVeon Bell instead of Escobar with our 2nd-rounder. That was a big swing & a miss; the kid is gonna be good...

I don't question his talent because I think he has some like Bennett does but I question will we use him.

He's a dime a dozen talent, TEs like him come out every year if we're not going to use him he's a wasted pick just like Fasano and Bennett was

I imagine the guys that are payed a lot of money to evaulate Escobar then to go so far as to see it fit to draft him so highly know atleast a ton more about NFL talent than the average keyboard scout. They are putting him into the offense quite a bit considering hes sitting behind Witten. Romo, seems to have lots of confidence in the guy as well as the coaches. I highly doubt they expected him to come out like Jimmy Graham or whatever ot would take for you not to write it off as a "wasted pick" so soon.
I can only speculate, but there has to be a reason this "dime a dozen" talent TE was taken where he was in the draft. Personally, I like what Ive seen from him. 6'6" 260lb TE with great ball skills are as common as you might think.
Time will tell.

I stopped watching ESPN's coverage of the draft specifically because of Kiper...pompous know-it-all (when of course, he doesn't)....

Escobar is Witten's replacement. That simple. Witten will probably play another 2 years IF he can stay healthy. Once Escobar gets a bit stronger and savy in blocking terms and learns how to run routes like Witten he will be a nice replacement. A hall of fame TE like Witten no, but he will be good enough that the drop off won't be huge. I think if he was playing for another team that used him more often he would have caught a lot of balls. Guy has good body control and soft soft hand and he's huge. Those guys don't grow on trees.

Here is what NFL scouts were saying about Escobar (taken from a Bob McGinn pre-draft analysis) in April:

3. GAVIN ESCOBAR, San Diego State (6-6, 250, 4.80, 2) - Fourth-year junior plays faster than he timed, according to several personnel people. "He ran better at pro day than at the combine, but it doesn't matter," one scout said. "He can really catch. He's what people are doing now. But he doesn't block at all." Three-year starter with 122 catches for 1,646 yards (13.5) and 17 TDs. Bench-pressed 225 pounds just 12 times, far below Ertz's 24 and Eifert's 22. "He's not a blocker. They don't even use him as a blocker there," another scout said. "They've got two other guys they use. As a pass catcher, he's not a nifty, athletic guy. Kind of a big target who runs on a straight line down the field." Scored 28 on the Wonderlic. Out of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. "Appears to be a taller Aaron Hernandez," a third scout said. "I had him in 4.84, but he sure plays faster than that."

Seems like a pretty positive (overall) report to me. Yes, obviously the kid can't block, however, it's way to early to call Escobar a wasted pick or bust.

I had doubts about Escobar and Wilcox. One has proven to be much better than I thought and the other, much worse. All in all, I love that we are getting significant contributions s from our rookies--and positive ones at that

I'm gonna justify why I was wrong though :)

Doug Free, Leary, and Waters I wasn't planning on any of that production.

I didn't think Wilcox was ready to contribute this year and I felt we needed a safety this year.... So I wanted a safety, just not him. X

I didn't think Twill would contribute this year and wasn't sure he would ever be worthy of a third round pick, and I felt there was Oline talent we needed, hated this pick. XX

I didn't think we needed a TE that high and I didn't really like Escobars scouting reports, and I felt there was Oline talent we needed, hated this pick Jury still out

Keenan Allen doesn't have Dez playing on the other side of the field. I have no problem with ranking him ahead of Williams at this point.

Say what you will about Kiper, drafting three rookies who are arguably top 30 I'm their class is insanely good production, especially considering the Cowboys didn't enter the draft with extra high picks.
