Buckner is nothing like that. He has been considered a first round lock long before this projection.

I think Buckner has Calais Campbell-type potential. Yes, Campbell was a 2nd rounder but he clearly proved to be a 1st round caliber player.

If you dont get a lot of sacks in college..........................

He had about 5 more this year than Joey Bosa, whom everyone seems to love. Besides, while Buckner is a good prospect, he isn't Mario Williams or Julius Peppers so I don't expect him to consistently get 10+ sacks in college or in the NFL (Also means I wouldn't pick him at #4)

Oregon didn't play Ohio St this season...

If you mean from the 2014 National Championship game, he actually had and ok game. He is in the backfield quite a bit. Watching the tape, it is quite clear his coaches told him to play contain and not get too far upfield quite a bit. It's actually ridiculous how frequently he is held too.

His biggest problem is he played a lot a 34 DE, 43 DT and even some nose tackle at Oregon so he battles a lot of double teams and not a lot of pass rush opportunities. I think hes a SDE in the NFL. He's got great explosion and hands, but he will definitely need a little work on technique. I wouldn't take him at #4. Mid teens-twenties, that's a good value for him.

Paxton Lynch dropped to 15? No way that actually happens. If he's still there at 4, Jerry will be claiming him. I understand Mel is a respected draft guru, but not even he agree's with his own mock draft, that's why he revises it several times before the actual draft.

“It’s going to be very tempting [for the Cowboys] to go quarterback,” Kiper said on a conference call. “You’ve got a shot to get a player of the caliber of Jared Goff and be the heir apparent to Tony Romo? You’ve got to think [trading up] is something that’s at least a possibility.

“Because you’re not going to have that much of a chance – you’re not going to go from the 20s to the top spot to get a quarterback [in future drafts]. That doesn’t happen. To go from four-to-one can.”

Kiper is a fan of Buckner and feels he could help the Cowboys defense immediately, however, this is a quarterback-hungry, borderline quarterback-starved, league.

“Buckner is a really good player. He’s consistent, he’s durable,” Kiper said. “But, hey, we’ve got a really good shot at getting Jared Goff here ahead of Cleveland? Then you do it. You make that move.

“And let’s face it – you saw what Dallas was without Romo. Tony’s had a lot of injuries, he’s not going to play forever, he’s getting up there in age now … get a couple more years out of Tony and you develop his heir apparent in Jared Goff.”

If Goff or Lynch are available at 4, take the QB.
If both are attainable at 4, take the higher graded player (physical skill set, mental development, leadership qualities, etc.)
Trust your scouting department. Don't get cute. Don't' over-analyze.

The draft is about investing on a need for the future with a foundational player (especially picking at No. 4 in the 1st round).
"Win-now" mode is such a false misleading cliche, notably when the team was 4-12 the previous year.

BTW, outside of Haloti Ngata (2006 draft), has any Oregon defensive lineman drafted in the last decade succeeded at the NFL level to justify being the 4th pick in the draft?

Click the link for commentary. (ESPN Insider)

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insi.../mel-kiper-releases-first-mock-draft-2016-nfl

1. Tennessee Titans - Joey Bosa DE Ohio St.
2. Cleveland Browns - Jared Goff QB California
3. San Diego Chargers - Laremy Tunsil T Mississippi

4. Dallas Cowboys - DeForest Buckner DE Oregon
It's rare to find a team picking No. 4 overall that can genuinely say "We're in win-now mode." But the Cowboys get a healthy Tony Romo back and that's a fair statement. If Greg Hardy isn't back, Buckner is a great fit. You get a 6-foot-7, 290-pound defensive end who can put a tackle on skates right into his own quarterback. The No. 1 thing you love about Buckner: major motor. He plays hard. He could have been taken relatively early last year, but came back and put an exclamation point on it.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jalen Ramsey DB Florida St.
6. Baltimore Ravens - Ronnie Stanley T Notre Dame
7. San Francisco 49ers - Laquon Treadwell WR Mississippi
8. Miami Dolphins - Shaq Lawson DE Clemson
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Vernon Hargreaves CB Florida
10. N.Y. Giants - Myles Jack ILB UCLA
11. Chicago Bears - Reggie Ragland ILB Alabama

14. Oakland Raiders - Jack Conklin T Michigan St.

17. Atlanta Falcons - Kevin Dodd DE Clemson
18. Indianapolis Colts - Taylor Decker T Ohio St.
19. Buffalo Bills - Jonathan Allen DE Alabama
20. N.Y. Jets - Jaylon Smith OLB Notre Dame

If my scouting department told me there was only one franchise QB in this draft, of course. Without any hesitation.

yea, given that situation, I would trade up fron 15 to Goff, but I think there isnt a huge difference between the top 2, and even Wentz isnt leagues behind

You would be willing to trade up to #1?

There's no guarantees Cleveland goes Goff..... I know a couple of older wiser Brown fans at work and both have agreed that they would prefer Paxton Lynch over Goff. They cite Paxton's 6'7" stature and his overall resume.

Bottom line, you can't just look at what Goff did to light it up in that bowl game. You have to take into account the overall breadth of work. That said, I hope they do take Lynch. :D
