I have great news. Melly Mel, the Notorious M.E.L. likes the Jones pick. Fit your opinion accordingly.

Click the link for much more, here's the Cowboys mention....

More I liked: The Jets had a tough decision to make at No. 6. Wide receiver Kevin White was still available, and they could use the added weapon in the passing game. But so too was the No. 1 overall player in the draft, Leonard Williams. There's no such thing as too many great D-linemen. I didn't love the fit, but I sure like the conviction to take the best player. ... Speaking of White, the Bears got their guy at No. 7. He looked right at home on stage in his new city. ... The Commanders might not have gotten a sexy player, but their O-line got better when they took Brandon Scherff. That's a new front office going with core talent. ... Baltimore had to be thrilled to hit a big need with Breshad Perriman (No. 14 on my Big Board) still there at No. 26. ... Love Dallas getting Byron Jones. ...Danny Shelton is an immediate-impact player in Cleveland. And by the way, I know some people question Cameron Erving. But when Alex Mack got hurt last year, the offense fell off a cliff, and Erving isn't just insurance, he's versatile and can start elsewhere. Man, did Cleveland get more physical.

We win the first round.

Kiper would have looked foolish if he didn't like the pick.

He was #28 on his board and had CB as Dallas biggest need.

That's not really true. I had Jones at 27....but I also had Malcom Brown in my top 15. So does that mean I should support taking Jones there with a clearly higher rated player on my board?

The winner of the 1st round to me is the Browns. But they had two 1st round picks. Excluding them, I think it's the Commanders, Jets and Dolphins. Love those picks.

On the flip side, the one clear loser of the 1st round is the 49ers. All the talk of Armstead to San Francisco for months turned out to be true. They did get a couple of mid round picks out of it in the trade down though.

I do not get the Arik Armstead love. I had him in the 3rd-4th round.

Higher rated players have to fit needs. Would be interesting to see were the Cowboys had Brown rated.

Kiper always seems to go by his ranking and what he thinks needs are and makes grades/comments based on that. I think he had DT as our 3rd need.

DT isn't a need?

And you should draft for need? This is what you're campaigning for?

You have to balance it. No team drafts strictly BPA regardless of position. Apparently the Cowboys don't think DT is a need or they would have drafted Brown. Whether we as fans agree or not, it's pretty obvious they are not going to draft a DT in the 1st round.

I think when there's a clear cut best player on the board and there isn't a trade option that trumps it, you take that player.

So, I disagree with your notion that because you have a guy at 28 and he's taken at 27, you have to support that pick. That would only be true to me if the picks fell as you have them on your value board. I had Eli Harold going to Dallas at 27 in my mock but I would have never taken him over Malcom Brown and would have criticized the Cowboys for taking the player I took in my own mock draft.

Fair point. I don't rank players and watch a lot of individual film. I look at the concensus of where most of the "experts" rate players and it seems most had Jones going top 25, along with Brown. Seeing what the Cowboys have done, as it got closer, I would have been shocked if they had taken Brown over Jones. Time will tell if they were right, but that's the case with all picks.

Here's hoping for Jarrett or Bennett tonight

Like Jarrett and love Bennett. If Jarrett is there at 91, and I doubt it, pick him.

Bennett is more likley to be there @ 91. Would be rotational rush man but a great pick.

I don't expect either to be there at 60, hope you're right

I'm sorry... i think the Commanders are the biggest losers, you pass on Williams who was the highest rated player in the whole entire draft!! for a Scherff who projects to play guard. all this with the #5 pick overall.

You should because #1, while your board may breakdown different than Dallas', you both agree he was worth the pick, thus not a reach. #2, It isn't a consensus that Brown is > Jones among draft experts. Not sure how much you value CBS, but they have Jones rated higher. #3, by all accounts they didn't seem interested at all, thus he likely was never considered. I don't know if it was something personal or just scheme fit, but I doubt his name came up.

It's interesting seeing @Risen Star react. On the one hand I think he values punters higher than DBs. On the other he said yesterday that if you had to take one, Jones would be it. It seems so bittersweet.
