KITNA WALKED OFF WHILE HIS PICK WENT FOR SIX
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 17, 2008, 2:14 p.m.
Any chance the Lions had of beating the Packers on Sunday vanished when quarterback Jon Kitna threw a pass that Nick Collins intercepted and returned for a touchdown with 2:07 to go.
And any respect that Lions fans have for Kitna may vanish when they see the way he reacted to the play.
Although it hasn’t gotten a lot of media attention, Kitna committed one of the cardinal sins of the game of football on the play: He didn’t try. He made no effort to tackle Collins, instead taking off his helmet — while the play was still going on — and walking off the field.
And according to David Berkett of the Journal Register News Service, Kitna offered no apologies afterward. Asked if he regretted heading towards the sideline before the play ended, Kitna said, “Did it have a bearing on the play? It didn’t have a bearing on the play so, no.”
That’s a terrible attitude for an alleged team leader to have. Does Kitna really believe that players should just walk off the field every time the play goes past them?
Kitna later acknowledged that he “shouldn’t have done it,” but the bottom line is that Kitna quit on the Lions on Sunday. It’s a different kind of quitting on the team than what Vince Young reportedly wanted to do during last year’s playoff loss to the Chargers, but it’s quitting on the team all the same. And when it’s combined with the way Kitna acted during the Lions’ Week 1 loss at Atlanta, when he yelled at coaches on the sideline, it’s hard to see how he can be a team leader, unless it’s to lead the Lions into last place again.
