About our linebackers Would we have approached the draft differently from rounds 2-7 I like the kid from ND we got in the 1st, but how would some of you think we would do different?
There were not really any LBs in the 2nd round and later that were a lock to be starters as rookies.
At the time of the draft they had:
Lee - Obviously he was probably 50-50 to stay healthy.
Wilber - They seemed to like him as a SLB last year.
Holloman - Talent looked really good for a rookie in 2013.
Durant - Steady NFL veteran.
Carter - The probabilty was that he should improve in the 2nd year in the scheme. He's shown NFL ability in the past.
With those players on the team, then they drafted Hitchens in the 4th and Smith in the 7th.
It seemed like a reasonable plan after their initial plan to get an instant starter (Shazier) in the 1s round didn't work out.
People had the same complaint about Frederick last year that they had about Hitchens this year, that he was drafted too early. Well obviously, the complaining about Fred seems silly now. Who knows how Hitchens will turn out. He's looks exactly like you would expect a 4th round LB to look this preseason. Will Smith has been injured for most of camp, but he looks like a guy that could at least develop into a decent Nickel type LB in time.
If they were really desparate, they could sign some decent stopgap veterans. A 4-3 LB is not the most difficult or expensive position to find in free agency. They could sign Kevin Burnett right now who is only 31 and my understanding is that he's healthy. He has started all 16 games for each of the past 4 years. The Raiders cut him, in part because they have some good young LBs and they used a top 10 pick on a LB in the draft. I don't remember the exact number, but Burnett was due to make several million this year, so it's not surprising that they cut him after they drafted Mack.
