Question: What is Brandon Carr's hit against the salary cap? How much do we save (or lose) by not bringing him back for his final season?

Kristi Scales: Cornerback Brandon Carr's hit against the cap in 2016 is $13.817 million (this past year he had the second highest hit against the 2015 cap at $12.717m, behind only Romo's $14.97m). If Carr were cut or traded before June 1st, the team would save $6.383 million, but he would still count $7.43 million in dead money against the 2016 cap. If the Cowboys decided to cut or trade Carr after June 1st, the team would save $11.1 million against the 2016 cap and he could count $2.717 million against the 2016 cap plus $2.717 million against the 2017 cap. I know it's popular for Cowboys fans and media to pile on Carr this season because of the lack of interceptions, but cornerback is still a big need for this team. Carr was very solid, though not spectacular, in 2015. By the way, his toughness is undervalued. He played a lot of the season with a bad shoulder. There was a period in late November, early December when he was moved from left cornerback to right cornerback to help protect his right shoulder (in regards to coming up to make a tackle, trying not to expose his right shoulder to too much contact). So I have a lot of respect for what Carr was able to do this year. And keep in mind that the Cowboys pass defense was good this year, finishing this season ranked #5 overall (227.0 passing yards per game). Unlike some fans, I'm not feeling the need to send Carr packing even though he has a major impact on the cap. Can you be 100% sure that Orlando Scandrick (knee) will return at full strength in 2016 after missing all of the 2015 season? And what are you going to do about Mo Claiborne? That's a huge decision the Cowboys have to make in free agency...

What are the top one or two things that you think the Cowboys need to address?

Dave Campo: Well, the first thing I'm gonna look at is whether or not I'm gonna take a quarterback in free agency and then pick the best available player in the draft. Or am I going to skip on the free agency, and if there's a quarterback I really, really like, I'm gonna take him with that pick if he's available. Tony's getting older. He's gonna be 36 this year. He's had a bunch of injuries, he's broken a clavicle three times. There's no guarantee you're gonna have him all the way through the season. That's gonna be first on everybody's mind. Then as I look at the football team, there's really two areas that I think they need to shore up. One is, they're gonna need corners. Carr is getting up there in age and No. 24 (Morris Claiborne) might not be there. Orlando Scandrick, you don't know how he's gonna come off the injury. The other position they really have to look at is ... are they gonna go with just one running back? Or are we gonna try to get another quality running back.

(gets nose swatted w/newspaper by brainpaint) but this time, kinda diggin it. i agree carr isn't what any of us would love to have but calling out for someones head is so very easy and common these days but suggesting a solution?

not so much.

kinda this way at work. ***** and whine but offer nothing of a solution or suggestion. :)

i'd look around, always. but i'm not in a hurry to cut carr. we have more areas of bigger need.

Carr is one of the most underachieving players per $ amount in the NFL. Sure he's a good guy in the community and he's a decent #2 when paid appropriately, about 9 million less than he's making now.

There are quite a few guys in FA that can bring what Carr does. You simply can't pay him that much money because you feel like you *need* him. We gave him a pass this season assuming the rush would transform his game. It didn't. Now it's time to move on. The only way he's is if he takes an 8mill pay cut. Even then I'd rather move on to a player that isn't allergic to interceptions.

With the money we save on Carr we can bring in Janoris Jenkins. He's a lot better fit for us.

I'm the opposite, don't know who she is but will be dismissing her in the future. Four years and I believe I've seen enough. That seven million will go a long way and you have Jones and Scandrick under contract. Some people say the best ability is availability, Carr has me reconsidering that.

Big time free agents rarely live up to their contract.

I'd keep Carr over Part Time (Claiborne) any day. He is pretty average but he would look a whole lot better with competent safeties playing over the top.

Of course I would cut him in a minute if there was a viable candidate ready to take his spot.

Carr choose not to take a pay cut last year and had a chance to go out and show he could get the job done. He failed, at this stage I would cut him. I have seen CB on opposing teams that are being paid a lot less than Carr go out and produce.

Carr is awful. Teams would make sure to throw a screen pass or toss run his way a couple of times a game because he couldn't be bothered with trying to tackle a ball carrier and it would lead to huge gains.

Scales claiming 'he was very solid' is hideous. He was downright putrid.

I would cut him after June 1st. I can't see any reason to keep him.

PFF just released their CB rankings, and take it what it is with their grades. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the link but search their twitter feed Jan 4th. Some Notables:

Mathieu #1 - 91.6
Jonathan Joseph #6 - 86.8 (D'oh!)
Richard Sherman #7 - 86.2
Patrick Peterson #9 - 85.9
Josh Norman #18 - 83.3
(scrolling down, scrolling)
Brandon Carr #70 = 58.6
Morris Claiborne #109 - 38.5

So I agree with some that just outright cutting him with no viable replacement doesn't make sense, because I'm guessing anyone in the top 50 who's young and an FA is going to command a huge deal. But if he wont take a cap friendly deal, then yeah, try to find someone younger. I suppose at least Mo has upside?

I can't either except who takes his spot?

FA or a rookie.

Since Marinelli is really a zone defense coach, it should be easier to find corners because zone is more about reading defenses and knowing your responsibilities along with being able to tackle well. Man requires more athleticism. It probably won't be a good player, but if we can find an average corner it's better than Carr and at a far better value.

That is what you take care of in the offseason. Dallas can find a guy who can't cover at a cheaper price. Carr is eating up cap space and has nothing to show for the money he is paid. Heck PS guys can do as much as Carr has done.

Call me crazy but I could see us going Jalen Ramsey at 4 then Kendall Fuller at 34.
