Question: What is Brandon Carr's hit against the salary cap? How much do we save (or lose) by not bringing him back for his final season?
Kristi Scales: Cornerback Brandon Carr's hit against the cap in 2016 is $13.817 million (this past year he had the second highest hit against the 2015 cap at $12.717m, behind only Romo's $14.97m). If Carr were cut or traded before June 1st, the team would save $6.383 million, but he would still count $7.43 million in dead money against the 2016 cap. If the Cowboys decided to cut or trade Carr after June 1st, the team would save $11.1 million against the 2016 cap and he could count $2.717 million against the 2016 cap plus $2.717 million against the 2017 cap. I know it's popular for Cowboys fans and media to pile on Carr this season because of the lack of interceptions, but cornerback is still a big need for this team. Carr was very solid, though not spectacular, in 2015. By the way, his toughness is undervalued. He played a lot of the season with a bad shoulder. There was a period in late November, early December when he was moved from left cornerback to right cornerback to help protect his right shoulder (in regards to coming up to make a tackle, trying not to expose his right shoulder to too much contact). So I have a lot of respect for what Carr was able to do this year. And keep in mind that the Cowboys pass defense was good this year, finishing this season ranked #5 overall (227.0 passing yards per game). Unlike some fans, I'm not feeling the need to send Carr packing even though he has a major impact on the cap. Can you be 100% sure that Orlando Scandrick (knee) will return at full strength in 2016 after missing all of the 2015 season? And what are you going to do about Mo Claiborne? That's a huge decision the Cowboys have to make in free agency...
