Lane Kiffin and Al Davis at odds over draft

Was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and they said Lane Kiffin and Al Davis were at odds over who to draft first overall. Kiffin wants Russell and Davis wants Johnson. If Johnson were to go first overall, it would severely screw up some teams draft boards.

Several teams that were willing to trade up for Johnson couldn't. Some that were willing to trade up for a QB won't be so aggressive because now there would be two QBs instead of just one.

If Oakland takes Johnson, the Lions will probably have no options of trading down, and have to draft at #2 taking Thomas. (good pick for them anyhow, but more picks would be better)

That will leave the Bucs high and dry as they want Johnson. They will probably be stuck taking Gains Adams higher than his predicted value (though I would take Russell if he was still around as Garcia is ancient and I don't think Simms will be anything more than avg at best.)

As for the Browns. Everyone had them taking Peterson. I think they were more likely to take Thomas. This could make them resort back to Peterson, though I would take a hard look at Quinn.

Falcons could make bold move for Johnson
Apr 26, 2007 | 4:29AM | report this

The biggest rumor on Wednesday was that Falcons owner Arthur Blank wants Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson and is prepared to trade his team’s top four picks in the draft to the Lions for the right to draft Johnson should the Raiders select LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first overall selection.

Detroit owns the second overall selection on Saturday and has been desperately attempting to trade down in hopes of acquiring more picks. A possible deal with Atlanta would give the Lions the eighth overall pick in the first round, one acquired from Houston in the Matt Schaub trade. The Lions would also receive the Falcons’ two second-round picks, 39th and 44th overall in the draft, plus a third-rounder, 75th overall.

By moving down, the Lions would miss out on coveted pass rusher Gaines Adams and Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas, but could end up with LSU safety LaRon Landry, Arkansas defensive end Jamaal Anderson or Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye.

The word in Oakland is that rookie head coach Lane Kiffin prefers Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn to Russell, meaning that Johnson could end up being a settlement-like choice between the young coach and owner Al Davis.

That doesn't make since at all. If there is a clear consensus that they both want a QB, why in hell would they agree to take something other than a QB?

Thats like two people trying to decide what they want for dinner. One wants pizza, the other wants chinese so instead they go to McDonalds and now neither are happy.

Al and Lane want a QB, but disagree as to which one is the best. If they agreed on one of the QBs, they would take him because that would fill a glaring need. Since they can't agree on how to fill that need they fall back on best player available. That is CJ who is better than McDonalds. More like deciding to go to one of them fine eatin restaurants that has boxed wine.

I would have thought that Kiffin would be the one to want Johnson. He'd pass on a QB this year for the opportunity to draft his golden boy Booty in next year's draft. Oh well.

I'm here in Raider country and the buzz from the fans out here is that the Raiders are playing this right -- you don't want teams to know which of the three you plan to take -- that way, when a team like Cleveland is sitting at three with a huge crush on Brady Quinn, you might be able to move down 2 spots, get some extra top of the round picks later in the day and still get one of the three they've been debating. Even if they don't get full value on that trade (i.e., they take a 2 and a 4) they come out ahead as they'll get someone they could have taken at 1.

I think they should take Calvin Johnson. Grab a QB at the top of the 2nd like San Diego did the year they got Tomlinson and Brees.

Wow, that'd be amazing for Detroit if they got that deal from Atlanta. I'm stuck watching that sorry franchise, so I can't help but want them to actually get some talent on that team.

I think Oakland has a bigger discision than most people think, and them not taking Russell really would effect how the draft plays out. I'm sure that we'll know soon though, because it seems like a deal is already in place by the time the draft starts every year, so there's no surprise as to who's going number one.

I'm surprised that the top teams can't work out a mutually beneficial deal where everyone gets what they want.

A 3-way deal between Oakland, Detroit and Tampa Bay looks like a win-win-win to me.

Tampa could trade up to #1 and take the player they obviously love - Calvin Johnson

Oakland could acquire pick #2 from Detroit and still get Russell and a draft pick or two

And Detroit could drop to #4 and acquire additional draft picks in the deal

Does that make too much sense?

I dont' think anyone knows what's going on. I've read that Kiffin wants Quinn and that Davis wants Russell.

These guys are throwing out so much smoke. What they really want is some massive trade bundle to come there way.

With the way that Davis was so pissed off at not taking Leinart this year, I doubt very seriously that he passes over either Russell or Quinn.

The Raiders have so many needs. They should trade down to 4 and still get a great player.

Detroit would be stupid not to take that Atlanta deal. They could still land a top shelf talent as well as have multiple picks in the second to either deal back up or land a plethora of starters.

They could realistically get six starters on the first day alone if they did that.

Of course, Millen will make the wrong choice, but that's the way to go about it.

Exactly what I was telling #1 Raider fan on my block this morning.

But I think that they want to take it a step further and trade out of #1 like SD did too.

I agree, there is no way Davis passes on a QB after what happened last year when he let Shell talk him out of drafting Leinart. Word is he was yelling at Shell, saying that he set the franchise back ten years.

With this in mind, it would seem Davis would not make the mistake of letting his coach talk him out of taking the player he wants.

It's pretty sad when Al Freakin' Davis is smarter then you are (Kiffin).
