Larry Allen Has To Go!!!

Ok, I love Larry -- best lineman ever!!

But that is the past. Anyone who watched him knows (and all the accounts are) that he is average at best now. His Pro Bowl birth is just respect for the old days.
He can't pull - he whiffs as much as he blocks on run plays. No one gets through him on pass plays, but he's a GUARD!! That' not supposed to happen.

The point is, I see all these people's offseason plans that only upgrade one spot on the Oline, which held the entire team back!! I agree we need to upgrade RT badly, and Flo will help, but

The oline needs a major overhaul!! The first step is getting rid of the old guard. LA isn't getting any better or younger. It costs too much to cut Rivera, and we save money cutting LA.

This is the most rational move. I think it's what Jerry and Bill are gonna do. Bill likes Al, Rivera (we'll hope his back will be back), flo, that leaves a new RT and a new guard (peterman vs. free agent)

Anybody else got a better idea? I doubt it...

This was taken from the Cowboys official website.

Larry Allen
2006 Cap Charge: $7.55 million

The veteran guard is expected to play in next month's Pro Bowl, the 10th of his career. And it might just be the last time he wears a Cowboys helmet in Hawaii, although cutting Allen might not be the wisest of options.

While his cap figure seems rather high next season, just what exactly is the going rate for a 10-time Pro Bowl guard who still shows the ability to play at a high level? If the Cowboys parted ways with Allen, cutting him before he receives a $2 million roster bonus, he still would count $4.01 million against the cap. So the Cowboys could cut Allen to save the $3 million, but then of course would have to find another left guard, which might cost as much. Might make more sense to keep Allen, who has two years remaining on his contract, for yet another season since they don't exactly have a ready replacement.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to cut him only to have to spend probably the same amount, if not more, to replace him. He may not be what he was a couple of seasons ago, but name me some possible replacements that will be available come free agaency time.

I just kept reading posts of the "offseason" that had a 2006 starting Oline including him. He's as good as gone. We should start the memories...

I've said this before...

Our OL was HORRIBLE last year... so the way to fix it is to get rid of the ONLY lineman that played AT LEAST average last year?

Sound pretty freakin' stupid if you ask me.

I think he will be around next year because the Tuna's time is almost up and protecting Drew is of supreme improtance. No way he drafts a OL early and hope he matures quickly, it's the same deal with our QB situation. He will ask Larry to take a pay cut and he will.

Larry won't play for anyone else except the 49ers or Raiders at this point of his career, and only beacuse of his hometown ties.

The only reason he'd play for another team is for a huge amount of $$$ which he won't be offered if he is cut.

All signs point to him being here next year. Only question is how much we will be paying him.

Don't we save like 2 mil this year and more in the future if we cut LA this year? That's more than enough to sign a decent experienced guard to compete with Peterman. We wouldn't have to rely on just that - we would have a legitimate battle. And LA is just not that good -- teams expose his immobility all the time now. His weaknesses are only getting worse. I just don't think he has the heart anymore, either.

He's good for another 2 years. What game did he get dominated so bad that you want him gone?

Rob, Johnson, and Rivera looked way worse that Allen did. Which of those players do you want to cut?

Only sure things next year on our starting O line are Larry Allen and Flozell Adams.

same reason why it didn't make sense to cut emmitt only to sign a lesser player in eddie george for about the same $.

i would stick with allen if only for one more year.

If Allen doesn't restrucure, he will be gone. If Allen wants to stay, he has to do a new deal. Same with Glover.

Why would we restructure? All that does is defer the hit until a later time. I expect LA to finish out his contract or retire on his own after this year.

When someone restrucutures their contract, they almost always take a paycut. LA has to take a lower salary or he will be gone.

Why can't some people get this?

I still say that his "average" is still better than some players "best".

Yeah I mean its so easy to replace 3 starters from your O-Line and be super the next year  . Forget the money part about it, the problem is it takes time for an O-line to gel and get used to eachother and thats not gonna happen quickly with 3 different starters. Plus while Allen hasn't been great he hasn't been either. Our main priorities should be just replacing our RT and C. Hopefully get Bentley from the Saints and at RT i have no idea who's available right now but anyone is better than Petiti who is the worst RT in football.
