Late round draft picks

It seems as though 5th, 6th and 7th round picks are speculative at best. Obviously what you do with those picks is determined by who is there when you are on the clock.

I think the team should consider one of the following options with the late round picks (5-7):

1. Trade back repeatedly from the 5th round pick on down. With enough trade backs they could end up with 5 or more picks at the end of the draft. Quantity is better than quality after about the 4th round. They are all long shots anyway. We have done well with UDFAs so essentially we would get a jump on priority free agents.

2. Use some of those picks on specialty positions. Kicker, punter, long snapper, special teams, outstanding athlete without a position. Many times players like that go undrafted.

I think the team is ahead of you on this. They put a bunch of young, raw players with talent on the phantom IR last year that will have a year of learning the playbook and hitting the weight room after their "injury" this year.

That includes guys like Noah Brown, Jalen Jelks (who flashed in camp), JonVea Johnson (who was the fastest WR in camp), CB Chris Westry, and then practice squad guys like Daniel Wise, LB Chris Covington and Donovan Olumba.

I want those late picks used on a PK and Punter, but I doubt that happens. I did see on site that said two PKs could be drafted in the late rounds though.

Speaking of Brown... I wonder what Packers fans would tell us McCarthy thinks about run-blocking specialists at pass-catching positions like Noah Brown.

I wouldn't mind if the team stopped bothering with WRs and TEs who are better at blocking than at making themselves useful as targets in the passing game.

I definitely wouldn't be against spending some late round picks on bringing in a Punter and PK.

Either that or get on the phones as soon as the draft ends and bring in a ton of UDFAs to compete.

That has been the usual path, if you look at the NFL kickers this year there are actually four of them that signed as UDFAs in Dallas and played here, then were cut and came back with other teams. Dan Bailey, Nick Folk, and Jake Elliott were all like that. Kai Forbath actually was too but he didn't make the Cowboys roster as a UDFA and started his career with the Commanders.

If you look at the draft websites (which mean nothing right now) they list the Georgia and Stanford kickers are potential draft picks but who knows how that plays out. If they think the Georgia Kicker is a player I would be more than happy to spend a #6 on him.

Generally I agree, but I think this is a good year to try to package some of those picks to move up. If you can package say, a 5th and 6th to get back in the third round, something like that, I'd pull the trigger. This team doesn't really need an infusion of youth as much as it does impact players.

Don't hate the idea of drafting a P/K, either.

We have to bring in a punter either by draft or FA
We need competition in camp for forbath
We need lots of bodies so I would be surprised with some trade downs at some point

Normally when they traded down in these later rounds, it drove me nuts at times. Then they wasted the picks on players they could have got as an UDFA. Or they picked players at positions that were no way going to make the team.

However this draft, I can understand this, as with all the FA's this years, and lack of depth. If they get 5 extra picks, I think this new coaching staff will make good use of those picks. The more the better, as you said, we could use quantity with late picks over quality, as they will all pretty much be the same talent level.
May find a few gems.

We should probably stop listing Brown as some deep secret prospect we wisely stashed............

He's been in the NFL 3 years and not shown a ton. Note, I am not suggesting he's some turd here but he is what he is. I certainly wouldn't put him in the same category as someone like Jelks, who has some raw upside. Brown isn't that type anymore.

I would be one of those GMs that trades my 5th rounder down as many times I could to get picks in the 7th round. Instead of fighting to get free agents after the draft......draft them!!! Every year....guys drop....that have draftable grades.
