Learning From The 2016 Cowboys Season: Dissecting Both Losses To The New York Giants
http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2017...dissecting-both-losses-to-the-new-york-giants

...Two of the three worst offensive showings of the season, in terms of yards gained, were against the New York Giants. Additionally, during the second Giants game, it was the only time all season that the Cowboys had three turnovers. As a result, Dallas tallied two of its lowest three games in terms of points scored versus the Giants. While the offense struggled mightily against the Giants, the defense actually played quite well. In terms of yards allowed, the Cowboys defense limited the Giants for two of their top five defensive performances of the season. While the Giants are best known for the offensive attack with their trio of wide receivers, Dallas limited Eli Manning to only 203 yards (first game) and 167 (second game) yards. During these games, Dallas forced four total turnovers against Eli Manning and Co. The stars for the Dallas Cowboys did not come out to play. Dez Bryant was targeted 14 times but only had 2 catches for 18 total yards. In addition to his poor play, Dez recorded a fumble. It was clear all season that Dak Prescott was excellent under pressure but against the Giants, he recorded two of his four interceptions, both of which came with forced passes to Dez Bryant. This is all consistent with Dak recording his lowest QBR and completion percentage against the Giants this season.

What remains the case for these two heavyweights is how potent both offenses are, and how great the Giants defense is. After this recent draft and acquisition of defensive talent, the Cowboys appear to be better equipped in the secondary and along the defensive line. What is interesting is that both Cowboys losses were highlighted by a blitz-heavy New York team that limited Zeke’s rushing attack and Dak’s down-field attack. While Dallas did improve their ability to defend the Giants, it remains to be seen if the Cowboys did anything to combat the Giants defensive onslaught. With the losses to two of the five starters along the offensive line, can the 2017 season be any different for the Cowboys against the Giants?

This is the youngest Cowboys secondary in recent history and could be the youngest in the NFL. Three of the defensive backs drafted this year have a pretty good chance to start. Awuzie coming out of college looks like a better outside cornerback than anyone currently on the depth chart.

Chidobe could also line up as a safety and is one of the best blitzing corners coming into the NFL. He should have an immediate impact on this secondary and should find a starting role against the New York Giants.

Nolan Carroll
Orlando Scandrick
Byron Jones
Jeff Heath
Robert Blanton
Chidobe Awuzie
Jourdan Lewis
Xavier Woods
Anthony Brown
Marquez White
Leon McFadden
Jameill Showers
Kavon Frazier
Sammy Seamster
Thomas Duke
Jeremiah McKinnon

the cowboys play three really good defensive teams and two of them on the road so we will see pretty quickly what they are going to be

Our defense stopping the Giants offense is nothing special. Making one of the top 5-10 worst offenses, depending which statistics you look at, is nothing to brag about. Fantastic, we shut down the 29th ranked rushing offense in the NFL! Having said that, they have done almost nothing to improve the o line so I expect the same results this year. I think our D will look like the '85 Bears for the first game.

Offensively, one game was Dak's first game but in all fairness it was also the Giants D first game. Many of those players were still learning a new system and had never played with each other, haha. The Giants D clearly got better as the season progressed, as did Dak and our offense.

The second game, almost like the first, could have gone either way. Both teams were one turnover, one completion, one first down, etc from winning or losing that game.

This year, with our upgraded future Pro Bowler secondary and Taco, I expect fully to have the upper hand. The Giants lost the irreplaceable Hankins whose spot will be filled by a rookie or a back up (our scouting department is clearly much better than theirs, I expect our rookies to do much better) so we should control the clock better and run the ball down their throats. Their secondary isn't any better so if Dez an just hold on this time, we win. Plain and simple.

Cowboys 2 Giants ZERO!

That's why I can't a it for this season. We play a ton of good defenses this year unlike last year. Most teams also have weak offenses. Want to see dak evolve.

There's not much to dissect, their defense just whooped us and we for some reason kept making DaK throw the ball instead of pounding the rock..

That is not dissecting the game. Any monkey can look at a box score and see Dak and Dez performed poorly.

I'm more interested what the Giants were doing to stymie them. Spagnuolo zone blitzing and rolling coverage caused Dak problems. They bracketed Beasley. Zeke racked up yards but there were quite a few runs of 3 yards or less and negative runs.

I imagine those two games Dak and coaches have gone over repeatedly.

I'm wondering if Linehan experiments with Beastly and Switzer in the game at the same time with Dez on the outside and Zeke in the backfield. This would do a few things:

  1. Take that 8th and 9th man out of the box which would open up running lanes for Zeke.
  2. Beastly and Switzer are so good at underneath routs, how can the Gnats blitz? These two have to be accounted for - especially with Dez on the field.
  3. Dak would have more air space to make his reads and hit the open man.
Problem solved.
