Taking his time

Former Steelers LB Porter will let market develop

Posted: Updated: Friday March 2, 2007 5:18PM CNN/SI

Though he belatedly joined this year's free-agent class -- upon being released by Pittsburgh in a Thursday afternoon salary cap move -- it didn't take Steelers outside linebacker Joey Porter long to generate interest on the open market.

According to a source close to Porter, at least seven teams have made contact to inquire about the three-time Pro Bowl selection, and they read like a who's who of the NFL's 3-4 defensive formation stalwarts: New England, the Jets, Baltimore, San Francisco, Dallas, Cleveland and Miami.

In other free agency news, Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris made a visit to Tampa Bay on Friday, and has received interest in having visits with Buffalo, Kansas City and Atlanta.

• Dallas and former Cardinals offensive tackle Leonard Davis are deep into negotiations, league sources said Friday. Talks have hit a snag on Davis' request for a $12 million signing bonus and a deal that averages $5 million per season. Davis is Dallas' first choice to replace offensive tackle Marc Colombo, who was allowed to test the free-agent market this week.

• The Bucs and former Giants offensive tackle Luke Petitgout are negotiating Friday, but are not believed to be close to a deal at this point. Tampa Bay is balking at some of Petitgout's contract demands, a source said.

• Former Atlanta defensive end Patrick Kerney started his free-agent tour in Denver on Friday, but is leaving the Broncos' offices without a deal in place. Kerney is headed for Seattle tonight, where he is scheduled to have dinner with Seahawks officials

NO Way...let him walk for that. I say if we are going to spend big money let's go for a sure thing (as close as there may be anyways) and sign Steinbach or Dielman.

That actually is probably the market value for Davis and it would seem like a bargain in a couple of years. He is a versatile OL who can play multiple positions and if the Cowboys dont sign him then they are going to be in deep st** because they will have the right side a total question mark. I support going after an OL in the draft but you still need a pretty good FA to solidify another spot on the line. I think Jerry is taking the approach of BP and not overpaying for guys and getting servicable guys who can play and develop them. BP would never let Jerry pay that much on a guy like Davis who has never shown nothing for a #2 pick.

I thought other reports mentioned Davis is coming to play RG, not RT.

And that was the hang-up. Davis wants to play Tackle for his next contract (as OTs get paid more than OGs).

I can understand everyone's concern about a large contract for a lineman. But we did give an over the hill Rivera a big contract that was a waste of money, time, and player. We need to resign Columbo, and get a RG in FA. We may have to pay a little more than we wanted to for O-lineman this year but we need some quality players not just stop gap.

Davis will play guard here.

Well then why do they want him to replace Colombo?

That's what the article said. It doesn't mean it's true. It's an assumption made by the mediot that wrote the "article".

A 5 year, 25 million dollar deal with a 12 million signing bonus would work out to a first year cap hit of between 3.0 and 3.25 million...

Given the prices we're likely to be seeing on this market, that's really not outrageous... particularly not for a starter...

Yeah but I don't think you will see him anyway. Joey is going to get big bucks more than likely.

Well I hope your right and he's wrong...because we could get Colombo who's actually played for us and pretty good for a lot cheaper at tackle.

I agree.

Even if Columbo were asking for the same amount as Davis it would be better for the cowboys. Columbo is simply better then Davis.

I'm squawking about it being Davis more then the money...He's a risk of becoming/staying a fat boy and underachieving. If we are gonna spend big bucks let's lower our risk some.

POrter is too limited now. Davis is not as good a tackle as Columbo - that is clear. So NO WAY is he first choice to replace him. MOre likely McQ. Davis is a guard here and that is that.
