'Hawks, Alexander agree to one-year contract

When the Seattle Seahawks open training camp Friday, star running back Shaun Alexander will be in attendance.
Alexander and the Seahawks reached an agreement on a one-year contract worth $6.32 million, according to the Seattle Times. The deal is worth the one-year franchise tender, which the Seahawks hoped the running back would sign after the team slapped its franchise tag on the Pro Bowler this off-season.
In exchange for showing up to camp on time, the Seahawks have promised Alexander that they won't franchise him next season and won't trade him during the season. Prior to Tuesday's agreement, the Seahawks feared the running back would not sign and boycott training camp.
If Alexander plays out the season, he can become an unrestricted free agent. However, the Seahawks and Alexander's agent have plans to talk about a long-term contract. Without a long-term deal, Alexander can hit the free-agent market after the season and sign with whichever team he desires. Last season, Alexander rushed for 1,696 yards (falling one yard short of the NFL rushing title, which was won by the Jets' Curtis Martin) and scored 16 touchdowns for the NFC West champion Seahawks. In his five pro seasons, Alexander has rushed for 5,937 yards and 62 touchdowns.
