Mens, I always liked ol' Tom. Maybe it was because he was the only coach I ever knew.
But in the 80s and 90s, I knew he'd never return us to the glory days of the 70s.
Then Jimma, hard-bitten, vindictive and laser-focuses came in and I was all atwitter at how he led his teams. Immediately mein allegiance shifted to this helmet-haired guy who built his teams on several principles:
1. Not all players are created equal and not alll players would get the same treatment, respect or leverage. Presently and currently we treat even the detritous like Randle and Weeden and Lee and Heath with compassion and respect. Randle be gone and those others I just know Jimma would not keep around.
2. We have got to be creative. Look at all the players he brought in and discarded (some overnight) until he would find the right combinations. Former no-names on defense became starters because of their motors that would not quit. Remember the time Jimma cut Lassick? Swerving Curvin? When he would flat out call out players at press conferences and tell the world that so and so won't last long they way he be playing?
3. That a well-chosen corps of coaches would do wonders. He chose wisely. In sum, they were the perfect coaches that ever body else in the NFL wanted. Then, as they drifted away and became HCs, we found that individually they were less than perfect. 'Member the Never-win-the-big-ones Norvell? The kind and affable but laughable Campos. The never could find his niche Wise and Dave Wannstedt? And how can we forget Butch Davis who seemed perfect until he wandered aimlessly in football after Dallas? Jason has a mishmash of itinerant coaches. Marinade was supposed to be good. I think he is good and will do better but really, can most fans name any other coaches on the staff?
4. That loyalty was for suckers when it came to waivers and cuts and after the draft.
5. That he had to do it HIS way and not Jerra's and when Jerra asserted himself Jimma just walked away.
But to get to mein point and back to ol' Tom Landry. He might half seemed inflexible and past his prime toward the end but he understood one essential aliment of football: Always keep a good QB in the wings.
Meredith, Morton, White, Staubach come to mind. At one time each was a bench warmer. He could make miracles happen with some QBs. Remember Clint Longly?
Jerra half not understood that consept of having a stud QB and a capable and talented QB in the wings.
Now before the ruffian element here shout and say "Gimme, you chick magnet and magnanimous analyst of football and chinese quisine, Jerra half to work under the salary cap and Landry did not!" Well that might half something to do with it but i still think that Jerra half not been wise as to sizing up talent and potential.
Jimma could and that is the difference from 3 Super Bowel teams to the wandering in the desert situation we are now in.
I would say more but tears cloud mein eyes and the ghosts of seasons past hurt mein heart and innards. And besides, "Cops" is close to coming on and I just love it when they thow the old guys from the cars and tell them to kiss the pavement! That is a hoot.
OK, holla and be kind because I half feelings to.
