The one year contract for Morris Claiborne is significant. First, he has moved dBown a shelf level by the team's and his own evaluations.
Claiborne has come to the realization that he has not fulfilled 'Deion aspirations.' But he has demonstrated now, the upward directional potential to play a prominent role into the future. That no where approaches top shelf pay, for not...but also shows that the Cowboys like his directional play on the carpet, and are gambling for a future change in status...They believe in him for now.
If Claiborne never threatens Revis on the All Pro voting, he at least projects, now, to becoming a dependable part to a Dallas secondary. He also has shown a loyalty at the team level of commitments. He has stayed a Cowboy with the gate open.
Bottom line, he is being paid now, at a demonstrated skill level...he'll earn future moves. As it should be.
Now, let's plug him back into a Dallas secondary as it looks right now:
CB - Orlando Scandrick, Morris Claiborne, Josh Thomas, Deji Olatoye, Terrance Mitchell, Brandon McGee, and Buddy Jackson
What is the unspoken 'smart money' saying about Brandon Carr with 14 March approaching? For a real discussion, that has to be spoken about.
One would think that this also has a divet reserved for a potential signing of Nolan Carroll, if he buys into a 'company' contract to prove loyalties.
But at present, a strength related piece is missing from the cornerback group.
Next, the Safeties - Byron Jones, Barry Church, JJ Wilcox, Jeff Heath, and Danny McCray
Many fans are voicing praise for a possible signing of Eric Weddle, but one has to question if he would somehow pass job description requirements for a Dallas signing. He is not a veteran quarterback and doesn't play on the defensive line. With his high pay demands, I at least, would doubt that a projected contract would also fit in the parameters of a smart and future relevant deal. He would have to first come to the table wanting to be a team player and Cowboy. I doubt that I see that.
So, I would have to doubt that we see Carr further, unless he lowers his demands as did players such as Giant wide receiver, Cruz...and former Cowboy DeMarcus Ware for Denver...so, CB is still a position of need, and now.
To me, the GM and staff will sign yet another cornerback shortly, or go into the draft, looking for positional upgrades at both cornerback and safety.
With that in mind, which would be the direction pursued?
Vernon Hargreaves III at cornerback
Jalen Ramsey at safety
Veteran or the draft?
