Let's just say (hypothetically of course  )...the game is on the line, and a FG wins it...the distance is near your kickers max...an asst coach runs to you and says there are too many men on the field,(which is one of his game responsibilities) which the penalty would definately take you out of FG range....do you call the TO (thus icing your kicker) or do you risk the penalty thus taking your kicker out of the game at that point? Also remember that these infractions are almost always caught and a flag thrown.

IMO, you call the TO 100% of the time. This is one of those calls where you either look like a genius or an idiot (per fanbase).

So, looking at it from this perspective, you're the HC, what do you do?

Are you really looking for answers here, or is this a rhetorical thread along the "Thinking-Garrett-has-any-imperfections-is-unacceptable" line that has become so popular?

Because if it's the former, you've loaded the question with a lot of opinion and bias.

I think he is really looking for answers. Ron is not one to purposely set up the drama.

I would call time out. This is different than thinking the play clock "may" run out. You definitely have too many men on the field.

However you want to interpret it

Risk the penalty?

Are there or are there not really 12 men on the field?

As HC, you don't personally know at this point, you're relying on the asst coach whose job it is to know these things.

Then I avoid the situation entirely by instilling discipline and an understanding of roles and assignments that prevents 12-men penalties.

If my special teams coach is hollering for me to call a timeout I'm calling the timeout be it too many men on the field or what ever. Evidently he sees something wrong with his unit that needs a TO called. No way do I risk getting moved out of FG

Exactly.....if it turned out that he was wrong then that's a meeting you have with him one on one Monday morning, but at the heat of the moment you call the TO....IMO

If my defense coach came up hollering call TO I'm calling TO. You hire these assistant coaches and rely a lot on them so why would I ignore them in critical situation. At the end of the game I would still take the responsibility for the call being the HC, but sure if I have an assistant who needs a TO I would be inclined to call the TO

Very true...if you don't trust them then they most likely won't be there long

Of course not and you see some HC going off on an assistant from time to time. As HC you have to take the heat it is part of the job, anything taking place on that field falls in your lap. I have to say I like DeCamillis but I have not been happy with his special teams unit since he got here.

I'm not sure of the idea.

If there are 12 men on the field, obviously you call the timeout.

Not sure why this is up for discussion.

Even if there are 11 on the field and your special team coach runs up and says call TO. Do you do it? There is not a lot of time to hold debate as the play clock is rolling.

Let's just say, hypothetically of course that after the TO your kicker misses and everyone from the media to the fanbase thinks it was a poor decision due to the result...when in actuality the call is not what was bad but more the result.

This actually comes pretty easy for me as I encounter this on a nightly basis in my profession. There are many times where the right decision has bad results but it was STILL the right decision that you would make everytime that situation arises.....then there are those times where a bad decision has a good outcome but it's still a bad decision because that same decision would produce a negative outcome most of the time.

With no apparent reason?

I dunno. Maybe. Probably would.

But what could he possibly see that nobody else does?

We're talking about a FG. Not exactly the most complicated play, pre-snap wise, in the game. Garrett's probably seen thousands of them in his time.

I'm not sure if this thread is in reference Garrett or not. Undoubtedly that's the way it looks and that's how the discussion will go.

Fire the assistant.

some times that is the case. I have seen Coughlin yell at Gilbride on the sideline not sure he is going to fire him over something Coughlin may have not liked or disagreed with unless Gilbride continued to do those things.

BP on the other hand seem to yell all the time at coaches on the sideline.
