Let's talk safety

I get the vibe that they're committed to developing the secondary through the draft. If they sign anyone in free agency, I expect it to be more a special teams guy like Joe Thomas. It can be frustrating, but if they drafted secondary guys as well as they did last year? I'll take it.

Right now, I'm hoping Dallas gets a Safety & Linebacker in the first two days. Especially Linebacker, I don't want to see the middle of the D get burned as often as it did in '17.

17? How bout the last 4 years. I’ve seen us give up 1st downs on 3rd and forever so many times due to that prevent defence we always run

Lol you're not wrong. I was just talking about last year specifically.

Wasn't Reid playing linebacker last year? How the hell could he be a free safety from linebacker?

Base
FS - Heath
SS - Frazier
Nickel
FS - Heath
SS - Woods

Heath is our single high safety.
Frazier in the box.
Woods is the most balanced player. Not much speed, though.

Woods has a future at FS

I’d still like to start next year

FS - Boston, Woods
SS - Heath, Frazier

Heath cannot play strong safety. That's where he started the year and he was so bad at coming up in run support that we had to move Byron there. Byron was better at getting in the right position, but his forte isn't tackling, which is why Frazier started getting playing time.

The Reid discussion got locked below but there was an interesting point in that thread.

Some people seem to think we are fine at SS and it's FS that we need. That might be the case, but what do people think Woods is? He's not a SS. Is he not a FS candidate? Or is he strictly a dime defensive back?

I'd like to see what he could do at FS and think he has a higher ceiling there than Heath or Frazier would have at SS IMO. But do people think we are fine at SS?

I am of the mind, bring in a legit SS and let Woods play FS.

I mostly agree with this. Heath and Woods can compete at free safety, and Jones IMO can be shifted back to FS if needed (just not to strong safety). Awusie could even do it but I really don't want to move him from corner. We don't really have any strong safety types other than Frazier. Woods might can do it, but he needs to add some beef if he's going to play it.

Now, I'm fine with going after Earl Thomas because that kicks Heath back to reserve, but it still doesn't give us a safety whose strength is run support.

We need a good center fielder so we can be more comfortable in single high--I don't think we have that guy on our roster. Maybe Woods can get there eventually. I'm all for upgrading the SS position, but I don't think you'll get your the bang for the buck unless you have that coverage spot locked up.

It would help if we played fs in the fs role all the time. Bringing byron in man coverage against TE's left the ss back in single high coverage. Heath and woods were the only 2 that could even begin to handle that dual role. We definately need to draft a free safety and richards knows what he is looking for.

Derwin James. That is all.

I've fell for this trap way too many times to fall for this again...see...

Patrick Bates...Raiders
Ken Swilling....Georgia Tech
Roy Williams....Cowboys

Big safeties that can't cover....No bueno:thumbdown:

I don't think Heath or Frazier are bad. Free safety is another story entirely.

That's where I think Derwin James would come in. Though, now that I think about it, we may already have a FS on the team. What if we moved Awuzie to FS, moved Byron to slot, and took a CB in round 3 or 4?

That's so may moves I think I'm dizzy. Lol

That’s a mediocre starting safety tandem.

Might be but, the FO loves them and you know that the FO does not commit serious dollars to the safety position just like sam LB and DT1-tech.
