Let's talk WR's

For the last 2-3 offseasons, many of us have begged to bring in via draft or FA a legit #1 reciever...but no real attempts have been made. Yeah Antonio Bryant didn't really pan out and Quincy Morgan was a waste of a roster spot, but neither of those guys could ever be GO TO GUYS. What I'm looking for is an Offensive Weapon that a Defense must account for EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

Looking ahead at this years draft I'm not sure i see that player. The new trend of WR's looks like it may be heading towards smaller, quicker, faster guys, so someone like Holmes may make alot of sense. But for whatever reason, most of the WR's in this years draft just don't appeal much to me.

How about FA? I know the TO idea has been beaten to death, but what about guys like R. Wayne? Another case of Alvin Harper? EHH maybe...and Wayne is going to demand quite a hefty price tag. One player who really could be quite interesting is Charles Rogers. Yeah he's got a little bit of a drug issue floating around him, but if he checks out clean, is he worth a shot? Comming out of college, this guy was labled the "Randy Moss" without the baggage. That was only 3-4 years ago? Rogers had a string of bad luck breaking both collarbones in back to back years, and when finally healthy had Joey Pick throwing him the ball.

Anyways, just was curious to see what other options for WR interest you guys. Remember Key and Glenn aint getting any younger, and we have been saying that for a couple seasons now...

I have to disagree with this...AB turned out to be his own worst enemy, but on pure talent, he has everything one could ask for in a #1 receiver...physically....too bad he's a D-bag.

Eric Moulds for a bargain price, he has been productive with Drew and may want out of Buffy with the QB position on very shaky ground with JP Losman and Kelly Holbert, not to mention the Coaching changes.

Wait until the combines. a few will emerge, they always do.

If Charles Rodgers is available, I'd welcome him w/ open arms. He's had a lot of injuries, but he's still young and worth a look if he agrees to an incentives based contract. As for the drug thing...well, that's a bit bothersome, but someone w/ his skills will always get a second chance.

Not sure if Wayne would be able to handle the double teams if we were to sign him (something he didn't have to worry about much in Indy). Still, he would be an upgrade and I'd welcome him too.

I'm also hoping Crowder shows something this season at NFLE. He has speed for sure, he needs to work on his route running and it's anyone's guess what his hands are like. He has the speed however to stretch defenses...and you know what they say about speed, it's something you can't teach.

I can see BP going after players like Bruce or Moulds in an attempt to make it back to the SB. I'd be ok w/ this as long as he brings in someone young along w/ them.

AB, i'd welcome back.

TO, no thanks (but I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune if he IS brought in).

I HOPE WE GO AFTER CHAD JOHNSON IF HE'S MADE AVAILABLE.

We can't have 3 30 year old starting recievers. Would you be willing to bench Keyshawn to 3rd WR? I don't know how he would take a demotion. I would like to see Moulds and Glenn as our starting wideouts woth Bledsoe as their QB.

I agree about his talent...he made some GREAT catches while here....

So, since he has the rep as being a "cancer" (an amazingly OVERUSED word) can anyone tell me exactly what he did, other than being a child...or what he did that is any different from Keyshawn.

Now, I'm not looking for "Keyshawn blocks...and he does this and that.."

I am simply asking, "What did Bryant do that earned him the bad rep that he got with the Cowboys?"

Also, btw, I'm not asking sarcastically...I remember he'd freelance on some routes...goodness knows Key did a LOT of that last year...I dunno, complain about not getting the ball???...hell Key wrote a book about that.

I really would like to see some Cap Figures to see what we have to work with.

I really would like to see Patrick Crayton take on Keyshawn's role and show him the door.

I really dont know where we get that next speed guy from. Would love to 2+ Receivers going deep, and Patrick Crayton and Jason Witten running shallow routes up the middle and on the outside.

IT wasn't AB's antics that got him in trouble, it was his attitude.

AB was all about AB. He didn't want more and more balls thrown his way because he thought that gave the team the best chance to win, he wanted to pad his numbers more and more to get his payday. Winning was an afterthought.

I don't remember which game off the top of my head, but as I recall Bryant cost the team a timeout because he flat out refused to come off the field. SOrry, that's putting the yourself before your team and winning the game, and whatever you want to say about Key, no one ever accuses him of that.

Bill has shown with Key and others he will put up with a lot of crap if you lay it out for the team on the field. AB didn't compare in that regard.

The Browns know it too. They had him for half a season, and were so enthralled with all of this talent they drafted a WR #1. And a year later after a 1K yard season by AB they have been very con-committal about whether they want him back or not.

Think they suspect someone is going to get their big paycheck and then mail it in until he gets closer to his next contract year? I do.

OK...sounds like you just described Chad Johnson.... :)

No, Bryant isnt Chad Johnson...but he is a good WR.

I was just curious cuz I had very little recollection of him doing bad stuff...ya know "he's a cancer" kinda stuff...funny, a third string WR being a cancer. NOT.

Thanks

Quincy Morgan didn't turn out as a bad signing for the Steelers.

AB threw a towel in the coaches face - while I was sad to see him go ( getting the bad end of that deal ) , the Cowboys can't let players get away with that.

Going out and picking up an experienced vet FA might seem like a good idea. But if you look at Eddie George , Anthony Thomas & Pierless price they didn't work out to well for us. So I think youth is the way forward.

For whatever reason it seems some vets don't work out well with Parcells and we have to think Bill will be gone after next season or the season after that. Building a young WR base is essential now.

Also I think the biggest factor to our passing game next year should be Witten. He should become the threat that he was when Vinny was here. Next season if we have to keep him in to block as much as this year or don't involve him in the passing game and give him the chance to live up to his receiving potential thats nothing short of mismanagement

As someone mentioned, refusing to come off the field, and throwing his jersey at Parcells in practice was probably the final straw.

I guess the jersey toss was the big issue....Shame....I thought he was a pretty tough kid... I was sitting with a GREAT view of his last catch in regulation time vs the Giants during the Monday night game...he ran a perfect route...and got whacked on the play...still held on...

Oh well...

How is it that AB could have been a #1 WR?

What about CIN RFA Kelley Washington? He has all the size and speed and talent in the world and we'd only have to give up a 3rd for him in return. That'd be a bargain...

I like the analogy that receivers are like shooting guards in the NBA. There's always someone who can come it and contribute in some way...For that reason, I don't think Bill will be looking for a star or a big money guy.

I think it's more likely that Dallas tries to get a player who can play a role while being molded to become more of a force after the current receivers move on.

My top 3 would be Wayne (and he scares me, thinking about throwing big money his way), Atwaan Randle-El (who would also upgrade the return game), and for the short term, Eric Moulds might be a real good fit... Wayne would be the most costly, followed by Randle-El and Moulds... I think you might be able to sign Eric at a rather reasonable price...

Then you spend a first day pick on a WR like Martin Nance or Todd Watkins...

Kelley played his high school ball about 10 minutes from where I'm sitting as I'm typing this, one of my coworkers went to school with him... so I'd be tickled to see him get a shot with the Boys...

That said, have the Cowboys EVER signed a restricted free agent?? I've been racking my brain (what there is left of it), and I can't think of one...
