I don't think anyone would dispute these 2 positional groups as being the worst this season. They look like they have no idea how to play the position, from the linebackers run fits, to their inability to play basic zone coverage, where our safeties get consistently beaten over the top in a defense designed to take away the big passing plays. Total mess.

I do feel the addition of Logan Wilson from Cincy should help, but we cannot rely on Overshown's health and need to overhaul the entire safety position. Think they almost HAVE to add two starters this offseason at a minimum.

When I study both positions, I really don't care so much how good of an athlete they are, but rather, are they always around the football? We have seen all world athletes like Bruce Carter, Bryon Jones become average starters at both positions, but a player like Anthony Hitchens becoming a solid starter being an average athlete. The Cowboys need to find high IQ, instinctive players at these positions and not be so worried about their 40 times and their sparq scores.

Edge is just as important, but these 2 areas must be addressed in the offseason if this defense wants to take that next step.

Just as we did with the DT position, we need to make a concentrated effort to find a high-level MLBer via, draft, trade, or free agency. Now they may have temporarily found the answer in Wilson. We don't know but we should have a better read by the end of the season.

One of my favorite draft possibilities is Sonny Styles........especially with the 2nd 1st rounder. His size and length remind me of LVE.

In fact......I would not be mad if we could get away with Downs AND Styles

both those osu players fit this zone scheme very well. If we landed both would be a home run. I think Styles could even be I play with our 1st pick, he is just 20 with a huge ceiling

current...i love marist liufau.
he might be the only home grown LB we have who knows how to generate a turn-over with his punch out.
something he and s xavier watts did often as teammates at notre dame.
i think he'll be a very good pro.
i love the addition of wilson.
hope he finishes his career here.
but neither wouldn't prevent me from drafting georgia's cj allen or styles from ohio st.

i'm still a fan of donovan wilson.
i love the way he plays.
and he seems to know how to generate a take away.
he's also not afraid of physicality.
but ohio state's caleb downs is becoming my dream pick on that side of the ball.

Both Marist/Wilson are undisciplined and play out of control. Yes, they are both big hitters, but they also miss a ton of tackles. Wilson will not be resigned and Marist barely plays snaps with the defense, now he has another backer he has to contend with in James cause of Wilson's addition.

Agree with the entire thread topic. It doesn't get mentioned enough. We have been below mediocre on the back 7 for longer than we think. Hooker was a guy nobody really wanted. He came to us because he was coming off a major injury. I'm not sure he has been the same since. I never saw it with him. Wilson is just a box safety, and struggles making reads at times. We really need to find a couple dudes to replace both our starters. We need to go out and spend.

That would be a dream situation for me.

The Cowboys and Packers need to lose a bunch the rest of the way to get those two players.

The Packers have been very lucky. They have played a weak schedule. The Giants using their backup QB and RB lost to them by 7 at the very end of the game.

Drafting injured LBs.

Most of these ones have been good to great but each has had their history of injuries and recovering from injuries to get good again.

Sean Lee
Leighton
Overshown
Jaylon Smith well he was good in College.

always a mistake to draft injured players high
Jaylon Smith before his injury was projected as a top 5 pick
he was never the same after the injury; that he came back and made the Pro Bowl once was amazing but that was pretty much a fluke; he and LVE were able to work together as a team that covered each others weaknesses.

I would be absolutely ecstatic if Downs and Styles were our 2 1st round picks.
A combo of Downs/Styles or Bailey/Styles would be ideal.
Its early, but I think Styles might be out play with our 2nd FRP. He could possibly be a top 15. I think he is name to keep in mind with our first pick

The good thing is, the first round is still fertile for Mike's. Both Allen and Hill are Mikes and day 1 starters and at least one will likely be available with our 2nd pick

Safety should he pretty fertile at the second pick as well if we lose out on Downs. Both Ramsey and Thieneman have Pro Bowl potential. If we trade out of that slot, one could be available early in the 2nd as well

Which position do you think it would easier to punt on as far as top 60 picks, LB or Safety?

For me the short awnser is LB considering how little we have at S. However the long awnser is more complicated considering how important a Mike is to our current scheme

Think linebacker is more important but if that would add Quincy Williams as a fa that might change my thinking.

Agree, Styles could be in play with our 1st pick. Depending where their 1st pick lands, they could trade back and fill all three due to the depth at those positions

You could very well be right...and if he warrants the pick with our 1st and is BPA I would be fine.

This would be ideal...Quincy and hopefully DMo is back to 100% then we dont have to lean need.

Think it is very possible he joins his brother and won't break the bank, either. Still would need a future starter, but allow the team to focus on another area.
