Lions to ask NFL to review unnecessary roughness penalty for tackle on Ezekiel Elliott

Lions coach Jim Caldwell wants the NFL to review the play on Monday night in which rookie defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson was flagged for unnecessary roughness for tackling Ezekiel Elliott.

"I saw it happen out there.I didn't think it was a penalty. I don't think it was a penalty today," Caldwell told reporters Tuesday.

While officials thought the rookie from Alabama went too far in picking up Elliott and driving him to the ground, many who saw the play thought it was a clean, albeit hard, tackle.

What's the rule on this? I thought a player could not pick up another player and slam them to the ground.

I believe the flag was for a culmination of things.

He spent the first half in Zekes face after getting up from piles.

He was talked to about it the last time I noticed it

And even though the slam wasn't vicious the intent was obviously there.

Definitely deserved a flag.

By rule, it was a penalty. I don't like the rule though lol. A few weeks ago it was called but was picked up. I think it was also Zeke and it might have been against the Vikes.

Exactly... Review it all you want.. You can't lift a guy up off the ground like that, hold them up, and then slam them.

It was like the announcers had never seen this rule before or something.

I thought it was going to be a flag real-time when it happened. Though I will say that Elliott's leg coming down first took some of the impact out of the body slam.

Either way, it's academic. On a side note, I don't think I've ever seen a whinier bunch of ref-blaming fans that Detroit Lions fans. Collectively, they're pathetic.

Years ago it wouldn't have been a flag...nor even thought about too much.

However...we've got d-linemen now that are 320 pounds and can bench press minivans. I'm OK w/some rulings on these body slams. I was just looking at it again and it sure seemed there was an intent to hurt more than just tackle.

Funny thing is the Detroit doofus loses his balance just enough that he ends up slamming Zeke down on top of his own body as much as onto the field.

This.....He obviously wasn't listening to the refs and was the last attempt to avoid something possibly worse. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what refs are supposed to do.

What game was it where the the defender picked up Lance Dunbar and body slammed him and the officials decided to pick up the flag because...and I still can't freaking believe this happened....the ref said Dunbar didn't land on his head, so this was OK.

I can't remember the game (Ravens, Vikings?), but I came away thinking, "there's hitting/tackling and then there's trying to go all WWE on someone" . I mean...that's cool if they are going to allow everything except a head-spike/Pile-Driver, but they may as well allow the rest of the WWE arsenal:

By rule it is a penalty. Wussy rule that it is. Just like when your hand grazes the qb's helmet unintentionally it's also a penalty.

If said qb is Tom Brady the sentence is death.

Its OK to attempt to injure or kill a player if that player is playing against Dallas...otherwise its a penalty.

Stop. That was not a penalty. The Lions player got him off his feet, which is necessary because as long as his feet are engaged, he keeps moving forward. The body slam was not even a slam, as the Lions player's body made contact with the ground first. I'm tired of the NFL trying to remove the physical aspect of the game. I'm also glad that Elliott was not injured during the play.

It absolutely is a penalty. You cannot pick a player up as far as you can and slam him to the ground. It doesn't matter how hard he hits the ground. The very act of doing it is a penalty. The league has determined that once you have the ball carrier picked up in the air, the play is over because his momentum has been stopped. The act of then slamming him to the ground is unnecessary roughness after the play is over. If that wasn't the rule, you would see defenders doing that numerous times a game.
