Lions trade RB David Montgomery to Texans

We are going to need a free agency thread here this week as teams make these moves unofficially before next week's free agent period opening.

At least someone knows how to draft running backs and churn the position properly.

Basically they got a 4th rounder for a RB with mileage . Both teams got something . I would think Houston & Stroud are at a critical stage . I know the weather in NE was horrible but the weather in Denver second half wasn’t Hawaii

That’s a big get for Houston… too bad Stroud is still Stroud. He’s gonna hold that offense back.

They are gonna need another lights out effort from their defense.
They had no running game last season, of course Stroud only been 24 with no running game will struggle. BTW, even though he was not as responsible this past playoffs. Stroud has won a playoff game each of his 1ST 3 SEASONS.

What a dumb trade for the Texans. Why give up picks for a 29 year old RB? Could have just signed a Rico Dowdle/Tyler Allgeier type free agent and kept the picks

I agree. Way too much imo for Montgomery at that age.

The team that drafted Montgomery was Chicago. He basically walked in free agency after his 4 years with Chicago. So the Bears drafted him in the 3rd round and then watched him sign with a division rival and play with that division rival (Detroit) for 3 years.

Demoted in 2025 but still averaged 4.5 yards a carry. He is also a pretty nifty receiver although used sparingly in 2025.

i think the ascension of Gibbs is the primary reason for the trade and perhaps Montgomery even made a request to be traded. Maybe he is confident he can still be a legitimate starter.

I wouldn't want this trade for the Cowboys but I think it is a good trade for the teams involved.

He (Stroud) was epically bad at the end of last season. Man!

Montgomery will help make them a more ground and pound, play-action type offense. Limit the amount of bad plays Stroud may get in.
