Live chat with David Moore on the Dallas Cowboys
12:03 David Moore: Hello everyone. Just got back from the Meadowlands and I'm ready to answer your questions. I hope to have a better winning percentage than the Cowboys do at this time of year.

With the run blitzes, don't you think we had a good mix of run/pass
Monday December 7, 2009 12:04 Charlie
12:05 David Moore: I think the Giants defense took that mix away. After being hammered on the ground for 251 yards in the first game, New York wasn't about to let the Cowboys run the ball in this one. The Cowboys were very good, and very effecient, through the air. What surprised me was once they started to hurt the New York secondary with the pass, it didn't open up any run lanes.

Monday December 7, 2009 12:06 Jorge
12:06 David Moore: If Romo ande Co. intend to make the playoffs, they must bounce back from this loss. As several of them said in the lockerroom after Sunday's loss, they have no other choice.

The def and special teams lost this game for thier team. Romo played well and the offense gave them a change to win.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:07 Jorge
12:08 David Moore: I agree. If you're looking for culprits for the loss, it's the defense and special teams. That being said, those two units have bailed out Romo and the offense several times this season. The 7-6 win over Washington jumps to mind.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:08 David Moore

What do you think the mentallity will be for this team after this loss. Can they bounce back or will they feel sorrry for them selves amd quit this season?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:08 Jorge
12:10 David Moore: This team hasn't lost back to back games this season. I'd say that's a good sign. I don't think they're feeling sorry for themselves at the moment. Now, if they lost to San Diego at home this weekend for their first back-to-back losses of the season knowing they must face an undefeated New Orleans team on the road next, well, then I think they could get tight.

Please, please, why do so many reporters let Jerry off the hook? He is the reason for the failures, but seriously, is it because of a fear of being locked out from future interviews or something?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:10 Tired...oh so tired
12:14 David Moore: I don't think Jones has been left off the hook. I believe he has been judged critically by the local media. But here's the question. If you question the personnel moves the Cowboys have made through the years, and you must admit that has been done, and Jones continues to say he will continue in his role, what's the end game? Jones is taken to task. I believe your frustration is that there are no consequences for his poor personnel decisions. The media can continue to point them out, but they can't do anything else.
The fear of being locked out has nothing to do with it.

Is the Wade and Garrett show now officially done? New coach and staff next year please!!
Monday December 7, 2009 12:14 Sammy Meatballs
12:15 David Moore: It's still a bit premature to say that. If the Cowboys win the NFC East and a playoff game this year, I'm not sure there will be a coaching change. But the Cowboys can't afford to drop too many more games in December and see that scenario play out.
Let's just say Phillips is on the precipice right now and it can go either way.

the secondary was awful again against new york. scandrick looked lost and seemed to be a few steps behind on several of new york's big plays; ball missed many tackles and assignments; newman wasn't physical and failed to make any big plays.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:16 rg
12:18 David Moore: I can't argue with anything you said. The secondary didn't give up the 330 yards through the air that they did in their first meeting with the Giants, but many of the problems that appeared to be corrected since that game resurfaced. Newman went for a big play and missed. It was clear the Giants picked on Scandrick. I thought it was one of their worst games since the game against New York in Week 2.

Hard to see two wins out of the next four games for the Cowboys. Team has lost it's last two road games, and heads to NO and WSH after the San Diego game. Is this team capable of showing some fire on the field and will themselves to some wins??
Monday December 7, 2009 12:18 JP
12:20 David Moore: I know it's cliche to talk about how this next game is the biggest one, but I think what the Cowboys do against San Diego will answer your question. If it can beat the Chargers and get to nine wins, they likely need only one more to make the playoffs in the NFC this season. If they lose to San Diego they will be on the edge the rest of the season. How did that turn out last year?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:20 David Moore
12:20 [Comment From KenKen: ]
what is a realistic final record for this team.. taking into consideration the december trend.. what do they need to win the division?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:20 Ken
12:24 David Moore: Touched on this a bit in the previous answer. If the Cowboys can beat San Diego to get to nine wins, they're in good shape. One more win should do it. Then, who that win is against becomes crucial because tie-breakers come into play. So, a win over Philadelphia in the final game of the regular season, a team they have already beaten, weighs more than a win over Washington would the previous week.
That's my long-winded way of saying I think they have a chance to win the NFC East with only two more wins, as long as one of those wins is over the Eagles and as long as the Eagles beat the Giants this week to push them back in the standings.

The Cowboys did not seem like they were ifred up and ready to do whatever it takes to win a game. Can Wade Phillips instill the killer instinct this team needs to win big games?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:24 Keith Crosby
12:26 David Moore: Yesterday was not a feather in his cap, as they say. Phillips presides over the defense. I thought their performance was uncharacteristic. Was that a poor game plan, a lack of execution or nerves starting to hit? None of those answers is a comforting thought.

Do you think Buehler should have been given a shot at that 58 yard FG and what about the rest of the season, Folk just doesn't look right?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:26 Hamilton in Austin
12:30 David Moore: The Cowboys determine before each game what Folk's cut-off point is before they would turn to Buehler. They were right at the edge of his range and decided to go with Folk.
What happens with Folk the remainder of the season is an interesting question. Phillips has never changed a kicker during the season. Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis is also opposed to doing that in season, believing all kicks go through rough stretches and the good ones kick their way out of it.
The problem is the Cowboys don't have much time left in the season and Folk has shown no signs of snapping out of this funk. He can blame the holder if he wants, but there are more to his problems.
If I were the Cowboys, I'd be sure to have Jason Elam's name on speed dial.

The last few years the Defense seems to play strong and then completely let their guard down..jekyl and hyde. Why is this happening
Monday December 7, 2009 12:30 Chris
12:31 David Moore: After losses to the Giants and Denver Broncos earlier this season, it appeared the defense had distanced themselves from the late-game fade that played into defeats. They had a relapse yesterday.
I'm not ready to say this defense is slipping yet. But check back with me in two weeks after they face the Chargers and Saints.

why havent we used choice and jones more when barber isn't producing? his fumble and poor route on 4th down were enormous mistakes in this game
Monday December 7, 2009 12:32 rg
12:35 David Moore: Other than Brandon Jacobs 74-yard reception for a touchdown, I thought Barber's first half fumble _ which led to a New York touchdown _ was the biggest play of the game.
The Cowboys only ran 23 times. That wasn't enough to get any of them into a rhythm the way the defense was stacked to stop them.
The beauty of three running backs is you have options. The downside is it can lead to a quick hook if a back isn't producing.
Given what Barber did against the New York defense in the first meeting, I think the Cowboys were right to stay with him as long as they did.

Don't you think that the coaches that actually win championships are able to keep a team focused and to light a fire that can overcome hostile conditions (ir Jimmy in San Franscico)
Monday December 7, 2009 12:35 Charlie
12:37 David Moore: Sure. But I also think there have been plenty of successful coaches through the years _ since you used Johnson, I'll use Tom Landry _ that were not fiery, inspirational orators that were still able to get the job done in hostile conditions because of their preparation and football acumen.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:37 David Moore
12:37 [Comment From ScottScott: ]
David - in talking to your colleagues and others, since these late-season struggles stretch across numerous years, numerous different coaches (Gailey to Parcells to Phillips), numerous different quarterbacks (Aikman to Bledsoe to Romo), numerous different leaders (Irvin-Coakley-James), what should this team be doing different from what you've seen?...Any constructive suggestions from those who spend the day criticizing?...
Monday December 7, 2009 12:37 Scott
12:40 David Moore: You bring up an interesting point. Jimmy Johnson brought up an interesting point the other day when he said he was always looking for ways to get young players into the lineup late in the season becasue he beleived it gave his team a jolt of adrenalin.
Teams get worn down over the course of the season. The argument can be made that teams with a veteran nucleus and little help in the wings gets worn down more. I believe this team needs a Felix Jones or a Martellus Bennett to bust through and start to make some big plays in December.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:40 David Moore

It would be nice to have a GM for this team. Do you see it ever happening?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:40 Keith

Why on earth did Mr. Fix it leave Scandrick on Steve Smith after saying all week they underestimated him in the last meeting.... Smith abused him all game
Monday December 7, 2009 12:41 Jason
12:43 David Moore: The Giants worked to get that matchup as much as possible by putting Smith in the slot. It didn't change because I don't believe Phillips is comfortable with the options.

have you ever seen fans that are more fair-weather than the cowboys'? we lost, get over it, we're still in first, let's keep on looking forward. sometimes i think being undefeated wouldn't be anough for some people...
Monday December 7, 2009 12:43 leo in el paso
12:45 David Moore: FaIr weather? I wish. It's low 40s here to today and drizzling.
But really, I don't think Cowboys fans are noticeably more emotional or irrational that the fans of other teams after a loss. It's a release. And in the NFL, one game has such a huge impact on perception and the standings. It lends itselt to that sort of overaction.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:45 David Moore
12:45 [Comment From BobBob: ]
Given Folk keeps blaming the holder on his kicks, and McBriar keeps accepting the blame, any chance they change holders on FGs? Maybe Kitna?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:45 Bob
12:46 David Moore: You hit on a good point. I think a change at holder could be a more viable option at this point than a change at kicker. The question is, who would hold? Jon Kitna has never done it. Do you really want to see Romo back in that position?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:46 David Moore
12:46 [Comment From ByronByron: ]
Not that I think the outcome would have varied much but I thought on the Jacobs score the refs missed a pretty easy holding call, Agree?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:46 Byron
12:47 David Moore: No. And to their credit, the Cowboys didn't say a holding call was missed. The Giants caught the Cowboys in a zone defense and Jacobs made a wonderful play.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:47 David Moore
12:48 [Comment From micmic: ]
Wade is in a no win situation outside of a Superbowl win. Why not just fire him now, give it JG and see if he can motivate. At least we can get a free look. Wades ho hum, well see attitude is horrible.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:48 mic
12:50 David Moore: Hadn't heard that scenario thrown out there. If a coaching change had taken place earlier in the season, I could see the rationale. But now? It would smack of desperation. In essence, Jones would be telling the team he doesn't think they have what it takes to win this season. I don't think that's something you do with four weeks left in the regular season.
Again, I understand why so many people are down on Phillips. Still, this is is 8-4 and tied for the division lead. How many coaches get fired in-season for doing that?
None.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:50 David Moore
12:50 [Comment From CraigCraig: ]
When are we going to see Choice run the ball... I like the way he runs... he's not as phycal, but is more like Emitt was, picks up the ward and falls for another. Barber is kind of a hit or miss guy
Monday December 7, 2009 12:50 Craig
12:51 David Moore: Choice is the third of the team's three options at running back. The only way he will receive a signficant amount of carries in a game again this season are if Barber and Jones are hurt.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:51 David Moore
12:51 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
What's your assessment of Roy Williams? Although he played well yesterday, I still believe he's pedestrian at best not worh a 1, 3, and 6. Thoughts?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:51 Guest
12:53 David Moore: He's not worth a first, a third and a sixth round pick. Few players are. But that was Jones' assessment. I don't think Williams should suffer the fallout from Jones overevaluating his worth, but I know that will happen.
I think Williams is more than a pedestrian receiver. I don't think he's a dominant one.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:53 David Moore
12:53 [Comment From RedRed: ]
David, why does it seem that every team hates us more than we hate them? I know the America's Team thing is a big part of it, but if we have choir boy players who can't match that passion, then maybe we should get rid of that "honor". Make them earn it like the black shirts at Nebraska.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:53 Red
12:56 David Moore: The Cowboys have been an arrogant teams through the years and have enjoyed more success historically than most franchises. Because of that tradition, even when they're not one of the top teams in the league, they often get covered and talked about as if they were. That doesn't set well with a lot of teams who feel attention that should be given to them is siphoned off by an undeserving Dallas franchise.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:56 David Moore
12:56 [Comment From RobRob: ]
The defense seems to always get burned when they don't finish off a sack after a nice blitz and the QB is able to dump it of to a someone like the pass to Kevin Boss. They also tend to leave the middle of the field wide open. Both the Chargers and Saints have offenses that will exploit this. Can Wade game plan around it?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:56 Rob
12:58 David Moore: This team's defensive identity is getting to the quarterback. When it doesn't, it's in trouble.
The next two weeks will be the ultimate test for this defense and Phillips' ability to adjust. It will also say a lot about whether he will remain as the head coach.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:58 David Moore
12:58 [Comment From SamSam: ]
Per Peter King: The Chargers lead the league in matchup problems for defense. On Sunday in Cleveland, San Diego started two 6-foot-5 receivers, Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd, and two tight ends, 6-4 Antonio Gates and 6-2, 295-pound Brandon Manumaleuna. They subbed two more 6-5 wideouts, Legedu Naanee and Kassim Osgood. Doesn't get easier for the secondary.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:58 Sam
12:59 David Moore: No it doesn't. On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys have exactly feasted on 3-4 defenses, either.
Monday December 7, 2009 12:59 David Moore

Any new news on Flozell Adams? Looks like the league is looking into his hit on Tuck yesterday. If suspended, the boys will be in a serious bind on the OL with good defenses the next four games. Who plays left tackle?
Monday December 7, 2009 1:00 JP
1:03 David Moore: Given the history of between Adams and Tuck, I'm sure the league will look at this closely. If any action does occur, I can't imagine it would knock him out of all four games.
But what happens if he isn't available? You might move Leonard Davis out to the right tackle spot, move Doug Free to left tackle then go with Cory Procter at guard.
Monday December 7, 2009 1:03 David Moore
1:04 David Moore: Sorry I couldn't get to more questions today. There are a lot of good ones. But now, I have to leave to hear what Wade Phillips has to say in his press conference.

But I also think there have been plenty of successful coaches through the years _ since you used Johnson, I'll use Tom Landry _ that were not fiery, inspirational orators that were still able to get the job done in hostile conditions because of their preparation and football acumen.

It would be nice to have a GM for this team. Do you see it ever happening?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:40 Keith
12:40 David Moore: No. The structure will remain the way it is as long as Jones is the owner.

Not that I think the outcome would have varied much but I thought on the Jacobs score the refs missed a pretty easy holding call, Agree?
Monday December 7, 2009 12:46 Byron
12:47 David Moore: No. And to their credit, the Cowboys didn't say a holding call was missed. The Giants caught the Cowboys in a zone defense and Jacobs made a wonderful play.

None.

1:04 David Moore: Sorry I couldn't get to more questions today. There are a lot of good ones. But now, I have to leave to hear what Wade Phillips has to say in his press conference.
