What would you rather do?
Most people agree that a pass rush is our biggest need. A franchise QB is either ahead or behind depending on how Romo holds up. At 4, we might be tempted to go with a premium pass rusher like Bosa but you can have a guy in Hardy who can give you the same level of play or better for a few years. And he is on the streets.
My point is that putting up with someone like Hardy might give you more leeway to take a QB at 4 to groom for the future while still getting a lot of help for your D by picking another premium defensive position at 34 like a Karl Joseph and maybe still getting an impact defensive player in the 3rd.
We see what the going price of moving up for a franchise QB is. This is what we are looking at in future drafts. It is likely cost prohibitive.
Also, I believe part of the delay in Romo getting his surgery done (something that was a risk to him but was done to ensure his long term viability for the franchise) might have been a commitment from the team to use our premium picks to add help on the D rather than his competition. I think this might be playing into Jerry's stance.
Jerry's words on not being ready to close the door on Hardy might just be his caveat that if he invests a premium pick in QB who's gonna be holding a clipboard for now then he might be more apt to bring him back to help this team win now.
