If Miami actually signs Jake Long, can the Rams negotiate a deal with their player, then the Falcons and so on?

I'd love it if they got a few of the top picks out of the way, it would really make draft day go quicker, and that's a good thing.

i would think it dangerous trying to do that with anything other than the 1st pick because of all that can go wrong in the process.

Yes, the Rams could negotiate if Long is signed by Miami. Yes, it could hurry things up, but it also could make any deal making for a top pick less of an option.

Another thing, it might help the price go down, multiple players negotiating as the lowest bidder to be the official #3 pick, or go to a team that will use them as a starter, etc.

I believe anyone can negotiate a contract with any of the potential draftees at this point. They just don't sign on the bottom line. And for various reasons it simply doesn't make sense to actually spend the time negotiating the further on down the line you go.

I don't think that is true. The NFL changed the rules when Jimmy Johnson was negotiating with players without being on the clock. Now I believe only the team that is up can negotiate with their pick. I would think that means that if Miami signed Long then the next team can negotiate.
