He had 2 sacks last year in 16 games. I don't know if he was hurt or what. I just know that's Selvie-ish.

Just going through every QB he got to in that video:

1. On 39 year old Kerry Collins the year Peyton was out hurt.
2. On Blaine Gabbert his rookie season.
3. On Andy Dalton his rookie season.
4. On Raiders' backup Kyle Boller.
5. On Joe Flacco.
6. On Big Ben.

That being said, he had a great rookie year. Problem is his production dropped every year:

2011 - 8.5 sacks in 16 games
2012 - 7 sacks in 16 games
2013 - 5.5 sacks in 13 games
2014 - 2 sacks in 16 games

All very good points but it's hard to judge a player being coached in that dumpster fire

His lower production suggests we could probably get him for pretty cheap, and see if we can get the best out of him.

People hate to think about context.

Sheard was drafted to play in the 4-3 under Dick Jauron. In two years under the 4-3, he had 15.5 sacks.

His rookie year he played RDE and had his best year. After his first year they moved him back to his college position of LDE, where he still had a really good year.

The head coach got fired, a new coach came in, fired the defensive coordinator who just had a top 5 defense a couple years before, and now he was asked to learn a new position and probably drop into coverage more. At first he was in the same position as DeMarcus Ware which is the primary pass rushing outside linebacker, but the second year he was put in that Anthony Spencer role on the left. And obviously his numbers fell off.

Sheard would be a great player to bring in for that LDE position and the best part is we could probably still sign another player to play RDE.

Imagine

LDE - Sheard, Mincey
LDT - Paea/Fairley, Hayden/Brent
RDT - Crawford, Melton/Okoye
RDE - Hardy, Lawrence

I think that would be pretty impressive.

Thats a ton of money going to FA DLs
Sheard 5m
Paea/Fairley 5m
Melton 4m
Hardy 9m = 23m new money

How about
Suh 14m
Spencer 2m
Draft1-DE
Draft3-DT=18m new money

Spencer/Draft1/Gardner-LDE
Crawford/Draft3/Suh-3T
Brent/Bishop/Suh-1T
Suh/Draft3-Nickel
Mincey/DLaw-RDE

Sheard was actually quite consistent/productive for a rookie & 2nd year player...posting 55 tackles both seasons & 8.5 and 7 sacks respectively. Both of those seasons were at DE in the 4-3. In his 3rd season, he had 5.5 sacks despite making the transition to the 3-4 scheme, flipping to the right side, and playing OLB. He also missed 3 games and rotated with 6th overall pick Barkevious Mingo. Last year was a down year, and he only started 5 games while playing through injury. They certainly wanted their investment in Mingo to begin to pay consistent dividends and he's in their long-term plans.

In Sheard's rookie season, the Browns were solid but young at DT with Rubin & Taylor. The starter opposite Sheard at RDE was Jayme Mitchell...who managed 1.5 sacks. They really had no quality vet players to help these guys.

First I think your numbers are off. I don't think Sheard commands 5 million, Paea definitely won't. And Suh is getting minimum 16 million.

And right off the bat your money is concentrated in one player who can be injured/suspended. Then you're relying on a guy who is on his last legs and running on fumes and a rookies who have never started before...

I'd be happy with a line like that. I just hope it wouldn't prevent us from resigning our own guys and possibly addressing the secondary. If you give me your proposed line, and resign Dez/Murray/McClain/Carter/Free, and spend a high pick on CB or safety, I'll be happy. But not sure if it's possible.

I'm sure, it isn't.

If the Cowboys aren't bidding on any of the big ticket items, I think Sheard is a nice mid-range option.

I like a guy like Sheard. Free Agency is about hitting singles, not swinging for the fences. And then the Home Run deals go to player like Dez when they've proven they can excel in your system for your team.

Rumors are that Cleveland will Transition tag him for right around 10 mill. No way he goes any where for 5 mill. Realistically you'll be looking at at least 7mill per on a longer term deal.

Looks good to me, could be worth a chance over a high priced future cap salary issue guy. Marinelli may be able to get some production back from his 1st few years.
Then again I'm not a scout or a GM....heck, I don't even play one on the internet........but I like all the opinions, just like the draft, not a guru of college players, but it gives me some insights of player s to look at, FA & draft.
