Looks like Emmitt saw what Randle and many of us saw

http://www.***BANNED-URL***/sports/...n-field-could-ve-had-2500-yards-last-year.ece

That Murray left a lot of yards on the field. 400 carries, behind OUR oline............He should have had the all time rushing record no problem. And 15 TD's is a small number considering the carries he got. He should have had 20 TD's minimum.

Get ready for big holes and big plays this year from our RB's.

On if it was insulting to hear 'he's only good because he has a great offensive line':

"At some time it does become a little insulting. When I think about DeMarco Murray, he has his own talent but when I was watching him run last year, and this is just me evaluating, I saw some opportunities there that was left on the football field where he could've had 2,500 yards, but he maximized what he had and he did the best with what he had. He had tremendous opportunities and the Cowboys — here's the most important thing — the Cowboys gave him the opportunity to do it, which showed, truly what his ability was like and how good that offensive line was in terms of combination. At the end of the day, you've got to have something yourself individually that makes everything look better and click better and feel better. ... There are certain talents out there that turn sugar into wine. DeMarco did that on his own, and yes he did have a great line in front of him to make that happen too."

So Emmit saw what I saw, but when i say it, Murray was the be all end all at RB for this team. He didnt leave yards on the field, has great vision, and top end speed. Im glad a 3 time superbowl winner is saying exactly what i said.

There is no doubt that Murray missed a lot of opportunities for longer, better runs... but Emmitt seems to contradict himself here. If he maximized his chances then he wouldn't have left yards on the field.

Unless he means that literally, Murray did the best he could but he just didn't have the ability to see or make the cut backs.

One thing we know about Emmitt. He was much much better as a runner than he's ever been at communicating with words.

True enough.

He did have fantastic run instincts. He made every cutback that he could. He was so stocky and had such great balance that when he'd cut back all the defender could do was get an arm on him and he would just run through that.

I took him saying "he maximized what he had"....it was referring to Murray's talent. He maximized his talent. And I agree with that.

I want a better talent behind this line. Or more accurately a different talent.

Considering he carried the ball almost 600 times more than anyone else and was often chased down by DLs for lack of foot speed (particularly after the last SB)... I would say Emmitt probably left more yards on the field than anyone in NFL history. So I'd consider him a subject matter expert.

But he gave Murray more credit than a lot of folks on this board. He understands that it not just on the O-line but the RB as well.

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I interpreted it too...

Which really is almost a derisive statement clothed in nice words. But like WPB said, Emmitt isn't exactly a wordsmith.

In his quote, Emmitt Smith talks out of both sides of his mouth.

He says on the one hand, he should have had 2500 yards, but he maximized his opportunities.

Huh?

Emmitt didn't have top end speed either. Murray likely had more top end speed than Emmitt... but Murray just didn't see the holes and the cutbacks anywhere close to the way Emmitt did.

Comepletely agree, Smith is one of my favourite cowboys in history. My girlfriend recently actually got me a signed E.Smith photo. I know it has nothing to do with this conversation, im just very happy about it haha

I thought it was a little ironic that this was coming from a guy who wasn't exactly able to reach daylight as often as it was in front of him. Not putting down Emmitt at all, but he obviously didn't have elite speed and therefore couldn't outrun some defenders. He left yards on the field too... it is what it is. Find me a RB that doesn't leave yards on the field and was more than a one hit wonder.
