LVE - the downside, coverage

Some of those yards attributed seemed to be in prevent mode.

Considering I read on here that LVE was a project, I think he is do well...

Pretty sure he goes over some of his coverage in this video...can't remember and too lazy to rewatch it but still a good video.

Cowboys seemed to have 3 LBs on the field in situations where other teams play nickel. This could be impacting the PFF stat. Also suggests the coaching staff is comfortable with their coverage skills.

Well I thought Cowboy Roy had this all figured out and it's because Dallas has the worst safety's, ever, in the NFL.

19 targets for Vandy.......why, that hardly leaves any for Heath.

I'll throw myself into the onslaught, but despite all of the positive media coverage, LVE did have a big flaw in his game on Sunday.

Leighton Vander Esch was targeted 11 times and allowed 10 receptions for 92 yards, 47 yards after the catch, and had his first career interception.

As a whole this team isn't that good in pass coverage. We're 29th (69.73) in completion percentage, 27th in passer rating (101.3) and 20th(7.1) in yds/attempt. It's not just a LVE issue, it's a team wide one too.

PFF just loses credibility with this one.

Vander Esch’s coverage ability is a huge strength of his.

I don’t know what they base their stat on but Vander Esch is about as good as it gets in coverage already for a linebacker.

PFF as a source is worthless. He was playing mostly zone so how do they base being targeted?
PFF is indeed worthless. The grading system is the most arbitrary thing going. None of it has any substance at all. No clear explanation on how they even really get to these grades they give out. It's new age junk that is thrown around a lot these days.

And yes, he absolutely was playing zone. Ertz would find the soft spot and sit down. They were not directly targeting LVE nor was he running with Ertz directly. Unless PFF knew each assignment for every player (they don't), they can't know this and who was supposed to be where. It's always tricky with zone coverage to assign who exactly was targeted. Not saying LVE is perfect in coverage but this stat is very misleading.
I dont understand where they come up with those grades. LVE wasn't playing man to man, so how was he targeted? Ertz just ran to the open spot and caught a lot of passes

PFF...

"Allowed" is a dubious stat for a LB in ZONE coverage.

What I see as well and also hearing this from many difference people.

What downside?!?!?

Lee isn't the greatest in coverage either, but both get a pick now and then, I'll take it. Where both are valuable is in there ability to read plays and tackle players in the backfield. LVE won us the game last week by doing just that.

Even if it was zone, he has some culpability if his drops were not deep or shallow enough. A player like Ertz is going to see tendencies and that is probably what happened. He is still not at Urlacher level in coverage.

Hey bro, I'm not dissing LVE at all... just sharing the stat - I have nothing to do with how it was calculated or anything like that, I think he's a stud and was a great pick in the 1st.
