He's at the combine, though nothing else is going on yet.

-- Says Hamlin's agent isn't happy about the franchise tag. And he says Jerry isn't happy about using the tag and doesn't like to use it, because it "creates ill will". So he thinks Jerry wants to give Hamlin a long-term deal, but Hamlin is looking for the home run and thinks he deserves it. It's kind of to pay both safeties so much.

-- Doesn't know what will happen with Flo, but some NFL people he talked to last year thought Flo was about at the end of his road and only had another good year or two left in him. Said Parcells might still go after him because of the familiarity factor. (There was another minute or two but someone walked into my office. :mad)

I don't agree with the connect-the-dots logic regarding Parcells' interest in Flo.

I think Parcells knows Miami needs a huge overhaul to reach a competitive level and that will take at least two years, just in time for Adams to reach the end of his career.

So what good would it do to spend big money on him?

I foresee a team that thinks they're close and needs one key piece to make a run at him.

Parcells brought Fergie in to Dallas in a similiar situation. It wouldn't surprise me if he went to Miami. Bledsoe wasn't exactly young either. Don't forget Vinnie. He likes guys who know how he likes things done.

Well Jerry, it isn't as if you didn't have since the end of the season to talk about this with him.

Jerry does a good job with the cap now....but he drives me insane sometimes with how he dillydallies with contracts. Every year he plays around and BARELY gets guys in for camp. Right now, we have three significant contributors to sign.....One (Flo) may wind up leaving....The other two will need to be tendered quickly.

One day, this waiting around to get deals done will bite us in the butt.

I don't like Jerry playing the waiting game when he had all of 2 months to do it either but I would rather he play it like he is now then go back to just tossin dollars to whoever HE THOUGHT deserved them.

I thought franchising Hamlin was kind of a dousche move. Hamin signed here and knew he had to play well for a good extension. Jerry knew it and now Jerry is being a slouch when it comes to getting the deal done. Maybe Hamlin is overpricing himself, who knows. I just wish Hamlin was locked up for a few years and the team didn't have to go through this right now.

And I don't even want to hear the BS about not paying both safeties. Thats such a load of crap. Theres no way his cap hit would be higher then the franchise number. Jerry could easily negotiate the contract to allow for less hit this year and more hit when Roys hit goes down. Thats nothing more then an excuse.

I sure like the way Jerry does business these days better than the money-slinging, cap-strapped, washed-up-player-lovin', way he used to conduct "bidniss".

I think JJ will ink Hamlin to a long-term deal.

He may just want to see what the "market" and contract is for other Safeties this off-season. Guys like G Wilson, etc.

It may be a lot easier to structure a contract with that information in hand.

Realistically speaking I doubt that Hamlin is going to get much more then what the franchise tag is.

I'm sure Dallas will handle Hamlin the Franchise tag is just going to buy some time until both sides can come to an agreement. Sorry folks but negotiation is a 2 way street and Jerry taking the blunt of the abuse on this thread is ridicules. A negotiation does not mean the player demands and the owner just bends over for him.

I agree, I don't think it is quite fair for the player to sign a one year deal and then get franchised but that is the rule. Hamlin could have easily set it up in his contract that he could not get franchised this year but he did not.

Jerry would not have franchised him, IMO, if his salary demands were reasonable. I think this is probably going to drag out a while.

I think Jerry has pretty much been very fair with our players and I think they will get things worked out. We did the same with Flo a few years back. The Franchise tags though does allow the added time for Dallas to do right by both parties

I wish we did a better job of developing our draft picks so that guys like watkins could step in and we wouldn't have to worry about franchising guys like Hamlin. To me, at this point, we should be getting Free and McQ ready to step in for Flo so that we don't have to give an old player a large contract. One of the reasons the Iggles have been able to stay competitive so long is that they dump a guy a year early and not 2 years too late.

from the FWST article:

One source said Hamlin is looking for a contract in the same neighborhood as Cowboys strong safety Roy Williams, who during training camp of 2006 received a five-year, $25.2 million extension that included an $11.1 million signing bonus.
