Cowboys considering cutting Adams
February, 28, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Dallas Cowboys have a difficult decision to make regarding left tackle Flozell Adams.

Jerry Jones acknowledged as much while chatting with a handful of reporters Sunday on his luxury bus outside Lucas Oil Stadium. He vowed that the Cowboys would make significant personnel changes and cited offensive line as a focal point.

Adams, 34, is due $5 million in salary for the 2010 season as part of a six-year, $43.8 million deal. However, Jones said finances would not be considered when determining whether to cut the Cowboys' longest-tenured active player.

The Cowboys essentially must decide whether they'd be better off with Doug Free starting at left tackle instead of a five-time Pro Bowler whose skills have declined the last couple of seasons. The Cowboys could also use an early pick on a tackle, even if they decide to keep Adams.

"If we could have a season like that out of him this year, it would be great," Jones said. "I was very pleased with his season. Certainly that’s the question mark. That’s when you have decision to make right there – can you get another year like that out of him?"

Keep him. Why cant he be a back up? I dont care how much he makes in an uncapped year. If someone gets hurt i want Adams coming off the bench before some rookie we drafted in the 3rd round from some small college in the mid west.

It's better to cut a player a year too early than a year too late.

I vote to say bye-bye to Flozell, regardless of whether he can be effective this season.

It's time to move on and go younger. It may not be the best decision right now, but it is best in the long run.

This is a mistake if they do this. Adams is by far the best option at tackle right now. Better than that other tackle that we have that got lit up against Minnesota.

Come on, Jerrah.. I applaude you for coming around to a logical way of thinking, but THE only reason why would FLO should be cut is exactly that, finances.

It's not because you can't afford him now, but because you know very well there will likely NOT be a lock out year next year, that there will likely be a TOUGHER salary cap when the new CBA is signed, and that contracts like FLO's are going to be an albatross on the team. You deserves kudos for this way of thinking, but be a bit more honest. If he was making 3 million dollars a year, with very little oringal bonus figure, this wouldn't even be an issue. All you have to say is that finances is only a factor amongst many others and you'd be fine.

By the way, I expect Hamlin and Barber to come into this equation at some point or another.

and, once again, don't discount the possibility of T-new's contract being looked over. His is actually THE biggest problem over the next 3 to 4 years the Cowboys will have to address if the salary cap tightens in the next CBA.

Because it's not the uncapped year that the team should be concern about, it's the years after that.

Besides, it would be disrespectful to FLO asking him to be a back up. He's played too well and represented the Cowboys magnficently, to disrepect him that way.

where was the part about them considering cutting Flo? I mean i'm sure they're weighing there options but that article had no quotes or even a "a source close to the Cowboys told me" talking about releasing Flo. But if they do I guess Doug Free it is.

not a suprise we all knew this was going to be one of the tough decisions we had to make during the off-season. while i think with flo's age it is definitely wise to sure up at the position i still see a guy who has a few yrs left in him. i also think freee is capable of manning the spot, i love his upside. either way i wont have a real problem with either decision but honestly i would rather free get an opportunity or we bring in a younger player to groom into the position

Probably smart to do it now. As much as I want Flo for depth, there could be some animosity there if he has to ride the pine at this stage in his career.
