Madden; Players, owners "have to" fix rookie pay scale
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 27, 2010 3:48 PM ET
Whether it's Sam Bradford or Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy, the first pick in next month's NFL draft will instantly become one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, with a contract guaranteeing him close to $40 million.

John Madden says that's out of whack and needs to be fixed.

"Everyone feels that needs to be corrected," says Madden, the Hall of Fame coach and former broadcaster, in a wide-ranging interview with Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. "It just got slanted the wrong way, and I think they have to bring it back. This is the bigger question: If you take it away for the rookies, then who do you give it to? Do you give it to the owners where they make more money? Do you give it to the veteran players who are deep in their career? Do you give it to the retired players? Maybe you give it to the fans -- think they'll get any?"

Madden, who has the ear of Roger Goodell in his role as "Special Advisor to the Commissioner," is certainly correct that a system that gives unproven Top 10 draft picks more money than almost any veteran makes is in serious need of being fixed. I'd like to think that re-slicing the pie so that veterans get a larger share and rookies have to prove themselves before getting that share would be something the owners and the players' union can agree on.

Ultimately, Madden says, finding areas where the owners and players can agree is vitally important.

"The game is so good right now, and any place where it's not real good we are working to make it better," Madden said. "I just hope they don't screw it up."

I know sure as hell the fans won't see ****. Prices will continue to go up, things like sunday ticket will continue to rise. Someones pocket will get fatter, but it won't be us.

Frankly I don't give a **** anymore who gets paid. If the NFL wants to gurantee someone that hasn't paid a down 100 million dollars, pretty much punishing teams for being terrible, feel free.

Well, Madden is right here, basically the weaker teams usually are the smaller market teams who are struggling to put a product on the field. These teams also are periennel losers. If there were to be a large limit on rookie pay scales, teams would not be trying to move out of the top 10 picks and actually select someone not based on the cheapest contract they could find, but the best player for the team, and the best player that can let them start winning games again.

The rookie pay scale should have been fixed 20 years ago.

Should be like this: 1st Pick gets $10 Mill guaranteed and the rest incentives. #2 pick gets $9 Mill + Incentives. Then to the #3 give him 7.5 Mill and #4 7 mill. #5 6.5; #6 6.25. Then at #10 start decreasing the slide $100,000 a pick. Something like that so that only producers get paid. Maybe work out some kind of insurance for guys that get injured. That would save a whole lot of money and at the same time force players to put it all into the game; instead of now where all too many only play their best during contract years.

wow....10 million huh?...thats too much for an unproven rookie ...i was thinking starting at a million guaranteed and league minimum salary plus incentives for first 3 years then they can get their big money deals or their own team can restructure after the 1st year if they choose.....

It's funny how Pittsburgh is a small market team in baseball, but not in football.

Perenial losers are a result of crap management/coaching.

Tell em why you mad, son lol

i doubt any of us willo benefit from this. the fans like you said wont reap any benefits but the way the rookies are paid is ridiculous. the nba curbed this problem in their league a long time ago and now its time the nfl follows.

the nba caps a rookies earning for their first 3 years in the league. if not 3 then i think after 2 at least teams should be able to renogotiate a players currrent contract

being we aint getting jack im all for the vets who have proven themselves over time and the retired players getting that money

I think 3 years is the way to go that way the 3 year rule applies and they can get paid or two years and the RFA on the 3rd year then 4th year out right FA unless they extend

Don't worry it'll be in the new CBA for sure, I know the owners want it in there badly.
