Because Mahomes realizes there's not that much one amount could buy him that the other couldn't and less pay means more talent they're able to keep and make multiple runs, securing his name in NFL history.
I love how people are pretending like Mahomes did the Chiefs a favor.

Let's see...

MAHOMES: $450 million (at a minimum and has potential to go up to $500+ million) divided by 10 years = $45 million average per year contract.

DAK: 5 year contract offer at $35 million per year is $10 million less per year than Mahomes' contract.

Pretty simply basic math here folks.

Mahomes easily is getting paid $10 million more per year than Dak's offer.

And this is the problem............... people think it's just so simple when it's really not.

Mahomes' contract is largely backloaded. That drives up the AAV. If you look at the next five years (or the 5 years when the extension years kick in) Mahomes AAV is $40MM or less, depending on how you calculate it.

Dak Prescott does not deserve $40MM a year AAV. He just doesn't.

He did . He could have held our for 50 million a year.
He got a record-setting contract in AAV, guarantees and total value. There's nothing else to hold out for.

Dak a) hasn't held out and b) isn't holding out for a number. It's holding out for a number in relation to his peers. Mahomes surpassed all of them.

No, Mahomes did not do the Chiefs a favor, they just weren't afraid to pay market rate.

I'm not a capologist but pretty sure this is incorrect way of looking at it. Mahomes still has two years left on his original contract. You can't just divide $'s by years. Every breakdown i have seen or heard indicates that his yearly salary doesn't get to that range until 2025. Jeff Cavanaugh has a youtube vid where he breaks it down & comes to the conclusion that you can draw no meaningful comparisons between the two scenarios. I'm pretty sure that they have said Dak could well pocket more than PH between now & 2025.

I finally looked it up, it was easily accessible. 33 was the offer.
Right which would make him tied for the 6th highest paid QB. Screw Dak if that isn’t enough. He isn’t that great.

NFL's highest paid quarterbacks (average salary per year):
  • 1. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $45 million
  • 2. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: $35 million
  • 3. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger: $34 million
  • 4.Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: $33.5 million
  • 4. Rams QB Jared Goff: $33.5 million
  • 6. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins: $33 million
  • 7. Eagles QB Carson Wentz: $32 million
  • 8. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $$30.1 million
  • 0. Falcons QB Matt Ryan: $30 million
  • 10. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill: $29.5 million

Mahomes signed a 10 year extension that is significantly backloaded which drives up the AAV. Dak can't ask for an AAV in the range of Mahomes if he wants a 4-5 year deal. His AAV requirement should be based on Mahomes over the time frame Dak wants. Why should Dak benefit from the fact that in Year 6 of Mahomes contract, he has a cap hit (and cash paid) of $60MM or $45MM in year 8 or $53MM in Year 9?

They paid more than market rate. They thru a huge number out there. 10 million a year more than highest paid QB. And secured him basically for his career.

If Dak leads us to a Super Bowl in next few years then he can renegotiate. Who would blame him then.

Dak doesn't feel totally at home. Coach change and his age is a factor. If he was he would have signed.

Here’s Mahommes breakdown for reference as not all are correctly interpreting.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension, that along with contract incentives is worth a total of $503 million dollars. The contract includes just over $63 million in guaranteed money at the point of signing and $141 million is guaranteed in the event of injury.

If you’ll notice all of the roster bonus money, you’ll find that most of this contract can become fully guaranteed based on Mahomes’ roster status. In addition to these numbers, starting in 2022, Mahomes has $2.5 million that he can earn by winning to the AFC Championship Game and earning the league MVP award. He’s already done both of those things once and he’ll have a chance to repeat.

Mahomes clearly had a different priority than just wanting top dollar in regards to his new contract. Most players imply let the agents do their thing to get top dollar and Dak is letting his agent do that. It may not be wrong to ask for the biggest piece of the pie but it is selfish as the pie isn't unlimited.

Chiefs were proactive. Two years ahead of his Rookie contract running out they threw him basically a lifetime contract which is currently the largest contract in sports history. It pays him well above the current market.

Most of all it takes all of the drama out in a situation where we knew Mahomes was going to set the market. And there’s no disputing he’s worth it.

The bigger point is obviously it’s a deal the Chiefs feel comfortable with and can manage their Cap within while securing the greatest player in the league for basically the duration of his career.

Well mahomes deal will be restructured or extended after 2026. He will never see more than 41-42 million a year. 2027 he is set to make 59 million. That likely won’t happen..

Mahomes contract shows the Cowboys probably should have signed Dak to a long term deal before this season. But Mahomes has shown he is an excellent QB in just a couple of seasons where Dak's performance has been up and down. It's a little harder to gauge how good Dak is, IMO.
