Mailbag: Mazi Smith affected by 3rd different DC

He can get better. But given his production he has not met expectations.

And given how he has played and not much improvement he has shown then expectations are he is not going to improve by much.

Can he become good? I suppose anyone can surprise but we based opinions on evidence to date.
Yeah but we don’t say Guyton sucks as if he can’t get better. Or Carson sucks. I don’t know I’m not arguing with what we’ve seen. He for sure has been bad.

Yeah maybe this DC will tell him he shouldn't still be in his stance when the opposing OL has already run by him

actually people have said Guyton sucked. even Guyton himself said he didn't play well. but same as we gave Mazi a break after his first year, there is one year of tape, vs. two years. Mazi is in a trend. slow improving trend....if Guyton is the same, then yeah he will catch a lot of flack next year.

It's everyone on the defense's 3rd coordinator.

I don't see excuse making for anyone else.

This is a dumb argument.
Not really. All the other players were not asked to lose or gain weight, nor play something they were not used to. Their assignments basically stayed the same.

His job in college was to stop the run, clog the middle. He was never asked to rush the passer in college. He said that himself. Said he was willing and wanting to learn that. But Quinn screwed that up as well. Zimmer was a lame duck DC, who really did not try to develop him, or anyone else.

Now they have coaches that actually seem like they care. As I said, we will see the results. Make or break year.
Yeah that’s fair. They haven’t done the guy many favors and he deserves a little rope.

The problem is if the FO is truly trying to win they shouldn’t count on it as much as they seem to be.

Same with Guyton, but at least there’s a ripcord on him.

Definitely excuse making for another Jethro mistake

he is simply slow off the ball and that cannot be changed

We shall see. If any improvements
Not expecting miracles. But will be interesting to see. Make or break year.
Team so not expected to make the playoffs by many fans, and if they do, not to go far.

Some encouraging words about Mazi.
Though this will get many of the typical responses.

Eberflus and Whitecotton are excited to see what he can do.
As they said, he improved in year 2 over a year 1. Which we all know was not all that great.
And this being year 3. And with coaches that may know how to use him better, at what he is good at. Instead of making him lose weight, and do things he was not asked to do in college.

So this is his make or break year. We will not know until game 1 or so. As fans will have varying opinions from the TC hype.
To the Dak fanboys, keep this in mind.
This will be a great excuse.
"Dak has only been here 10 years or so and under various coaches!"

Even if he had the same DC he may be asked to do those things.

Typically, the plug-and-play DT's are top 5 picks and they still have their early issues, particularly against the run.

Mazi will improve again this season. I

Mazi needs to not flop around on the field like a doormat flounder. This is the year…he proves something or he just sucks.

I'd like nothing better than to see Mazi find better ways to improve his game. Hopefully, those new coaches he'll come into contact with will help him to learn. Let's do whatever we can to be far more encouraging for him to embrace better times. Maybe it's time for Mazi to see exactly what to do and how to do it. He seems to have the physical tools to do well at his job. Here's wishing him success.

We have been bad up the middle against the run.

We have been worse stopping the run on the edge
While all the focus is Dak, running game, it's gonna come down to our defense specifically their ability to stop the run and get the pass rush going.

Mazi took a good step in the right direction last year under Zim. I think it was the best thing for him to have a guy like Zim after what they did to him his rookie year. I fully expect him to continue to get better. If he wants it he can do. The guy has talent and the tools. He’s a player I’m definitely interested in seeing progress this year.
