Make the Pro Bowl mean something

I do not know about you guys, but I am really getting tired of all these players opting out of playing in the Pro Bowl. Why not make some sort of incintive to not only play but win. Make it something like if the AFC or NFC wins they get like 2 extra home games the next year, or if you win you get an extra bonus of some sort.

I thought they did have incentive.....they go to hawaii for free and doesn't the winning team bring home like 50K? Also read in some blurb a little back that some players have Pro Bowl incentives in their contracts.....

I think the incentive is there.....most are just to busy doing nothing

Why does it need to mean something? It is an exhibition to have fun. Plus two extra home games for every team in the winning conference is just not feasible. I think MLB is dumb to have their all star game decide home field advantage in the world series.

I no longer care about any All Star game in any sport. If they opt out, no big deal to me. I won't see it anyway.

Yeah that is crazy but maybe home field for the 1st two games of the season isn't so bad...

I agree. I will watch this game only because of Romo if not for that I would not bother

That would mean that every game in the opening weekends would have to be an AFC/NFC matchup.
Is that the best way for the NFL to start a season? They prefer matchups between rivals, which are usually teams within the same conference. Colts/Pats for example.

Plus some don't look at starting the season off at home as a benefit. Some coaches and teams prefer to start out on the road. They like to test their teams early on the road and enjoy having home games later in the season.

Why?

The probowl is a joke and should remain that way. You know teams hate for their player to go because of the chance for injury. Playing an extra game is not an honor -- it is a disaster waiting to happen. Players who makes it may have already played 20+ games during the season/pre-season. The last thing these guys need is something on the line.

I really thought this game would end after Robert Edwards came close to having to have his leg amputated after a skills competition. You make this mean more and someone is going to get hurt bad.

I think some players still consider it an honor to go especially guys making their 1st trip. As for injuries I tend to be more concerned with injuries taking place in the off-season like getting shot or getting in a motocycle accident than I do of any playing injury during the Pro Bowl.

Steps have been taken to reduce the risk of injuries (no blitzing,no bump and run, changing the old artificial turf at Aloha Stadium to field turf) However, it still carries some level of risk as any game of football does.

With all that being said, besides Edwards' injury (which was a freak occurance), I can't recall any major injuries happening at the Pro Bowl. At least since it's been in Hawaii.

and a big part of that is that guys aren't going all out since the game has no meaning.

it is one thing to make the ML All Star game mean something -- teams play 162 games - so an extra one isn't going to hurt. But when you have a 16 game schedule and add another meaningful game to it you are asking for trouble -- especially since the Pro Bowl is after the SB and guys who missed the playoffs may not be in top shape after over a month off.

Agreed. It's not meant to be much more than a fun little exhibition (and a nice boost to Hawaii's economy) I'll be there on Saturday just to have a bit of fun. We're pretty pro football deprived here in the islands.
