Back in the old days, there were no Unions or Lawyers involved to the extent they are now. Even if you wanted to play with an injury, today, you would have the Union involved and the lawyers on both sides involved. The Union would say no because that influences other players and what is expected of them etc. The lawyers for the NFL would be worried about getting filed on and the players lawyers would be looking at how they could file. It's not the same game at all but it's the game we got.

You are very right, of course. It's very far from the game most guys played because they loved to game. Salaries were very low in those
days and guys played for very different reasons than today. The Union didn't help the game get better in my view though it is what it is.

I didn't know Garrison played with a broken leg. I knew he once played with broken ribs and fingers, nose and a few other things but I didn't know that. I know Jack Youngblood played with a broken leg in the through the playoffs and the Super Bowl in 79. For sure, Garrison was one of the all time tough guys in the NFL thou.

Yes he was tough...but I always liked what he said about his playing abilities...
When Walt was asked about his running abilities he said....if you need 3 yards, I will get you 3 yards, if you need 5 yards, I will get you 3 yards.....:lmao2:or it went something like that.

I don't recall what game he played with a broken leg, but I remember reading it somewhere. He broke it, taped it up to finish the game, or the next few series.

A knee injury finished his career I think. He owns a restaurant in Flower Mound, about 20 minutes from me.

I think that was actually Meredith but yeah, that statement was both funny and true. Good one Jazz.

When is this team going to start replacing all its draftees' bones with titanium ones? I swear that seems like it's what it will take.

Yes Meredith said that.

from wikipedia....

One of the more humorous sports quotes was attributed to Cowboy quarterback Don Meredith speaking about Garrison's dependability, "If it was third down, and you needed four yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, he'd get ya five. And if it was third down and ya needed twenty yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, by God, he'd get you five."

A "real" cowboy, he spent time on the professional rodeo circuit during the football off-seasons. His signing bonus with the Cowboys in 1966 included a horse trailer. In June 1975, Garrison made an appearance at the College National Rodeo Finals in Bozeman, Montana; a knee injury he sustained in an exhibition steer wrestling accident ended his pro football career.[5] He retired in August 1975, and was replaced in the starting lineup with Robert Newhouse.[6]

Nice, he's an all timer for sure. Was sorry to see him go but have to admit, I loved Newhouse as well.

Trying to find the broken leg thing, maybe I was wrong or the article was wrong...but I found this for now.

14. Walt Garrison – Broken Ribs

In a sport that specializes in making tough guys crumble, here is one of the most pain-resistant in the history of the NFL. Dallas Cowboys running back Walt Garrison would have probably have kept playing football after someone had hypothetically fed him through a wood-chipper. His tough style of play saw him retired at age 30. In 1970, he played in the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers; a game that he finished, despite breaking three ribs and his collarbone.

Yikes. Half basically were out of the league within a season. Hopefully that has more to do with these players talent and not as much to do with the injury.

You are reading it wrong. The Yes ones are the ones that refractured the metatarsal. Just going by the chart the zone 2 incomplete fractures seem to be the tricky ones.

The seasons since, is when the chart was made the seasons the player played since the injury.

When will this turn into a torn Achilles or other injury?

I hope the newest defensive tackle is every bit as tough as was Walt Garrison. Great memories there. I like me some Don Meredith as well...

This was good news for Rodney Coe and Terrell McClain. This may force Collins to PUP, and they can stay on the team a while.
