Wasn't going to get a ton of playing time anyways.

There's some merit to your post at least early in the season.

IF T. McClain is healthy (at least to start the season) then he's probably the top sub for both the #1 & #3 tackle spots.

The other thing is we don't have a clue what kind of break this is... Some are calling it a "Lawrence" break, some are calling it a "Dez" break... Who knows? Other than what the Cowboys have said, "10 to 12 weeks".

It's been reported as a 5th metatarsal fracture. Whether that automatically makes it a jones fracture I'm not positive. The chart that I posted earlier showed that they had different zones of fractures.

I mean, you obviously want your rookies to be able to have a full camp. But if there was ever a time for him to get an injury, it's now. Right now, we need Thornton to stay healthy since he'll be far more valuable early on.

Thornton and T. McClain.

Anytime McClain has been out there, he's been more than acceptable.

I think Collins had a good shot to start week 1 considering the circumstances.

It's a blow because the other options are stiffs. He might not have been.

Start over T. Crawford & Thornton?

I don't think T. Crawford is doing the DE-thing during the first 4 games.

  • This sucks for Malik. Rookies need all the practices, walthroughs, one on ones, ota's, and conditioning possible. This set back will be more than 10-12 weeks. 10-12 weeks is when it heals ( according to the FO), then he needs to get back into condition. It will take 16-20 weeks. I wish him the best of luck and a speedy recovery!
  • Injuries are expected in the off season- every team has them, but this is bad for the defense. The second rd defensive pick I'll not play this season, and now the third rd pick is injured. Coupled with two defensive ends with suspensions.
  • Free agents are still available, and although the FO would like to take a look at what they have first ( in late round draft picks, UDFAs, and practice squad homies), it would be nice to have the FAs in during OTAs and camp. Wilkerson, freeney, Hardy, Mike Neal, dontae Whitner, Leon hall.

Jones fracture means the break is at the end of the bone. Causes complications due to bloodflow issues which are not the case on a central break.

Dez rushed back. Romo rushed back. Gregory rushed back. Crawford playing with one arm. I don't trust this staff's ability to diagnose and treat injuries properly.

None of them worsened their injury. You return at that point so you can contribute without setback as opposed to waiting til fully healed. IOW, proper diagnosis. Players can also manipulate what they feed the doctor to get back on the field early as well particularly when it comes to issues of pain or anything that doesn't show on a scan.

With the money these guys get paid, and with the post season still on the line, they're going to rush back as long as it's not going to risk extending the injury beyond the start of training camp the following season. If you think a partial Dez/Tony/Gregory/Crawford is better than you're alternative, it's the right move to rush them back even at diminished capacity if it keeps the season going. It's not a mistaken medical diagnosis given the situation. It's running medical risks in order to try to preserve a disaster of a season. It didn't work, but you still take those risks if they're not going to hurt the players' health long term. And we've seen nothing to suggest any of those situations did that.
