The NFL has a sense of the dramatic when it comes to the Chiefs’ preseason schedule. Or maybe it’s just coincidence. Either way, their first two opponents are teams that are the strongest candidates to trade for quarterback Trent Green. The Chiefs begin their preseason Aug. 11 against the Browns in Cleveland. They then play against Miami on Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Arrowhead Stadium. Chances are one of those games will pit the Chiefs against Green, their starting quarterback the last six seasons. The Chiefs are trying to trade Green, and Cleveland and Miami are the two most likely landing spots. The Chiefs and Dolphins have gone as far as to exchange trade offers. Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson discussed a trade with his Cleveland counterpart, Phil Savage, at last week’s NFL meetings in Phoenix.

The Commanders expected to receive a counteroffer to their proposed trade for Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs, but league sources said the Bears did not contact the Commanders yesterday.

The David Carr Tour kicked off Monday night, when the former Houston Texans quarterback arrived in Carolina for a visit with the Panthers. Carr will spend today meeting with Panthers officials before flying straight out to Seattle to meet with the Seahawks. Carolina would seem to be a better opportunity for Carr, as it does not have a clear-cut No. 2 quarterback and its starter, Jake Delhomme, struggled at the end of last season. But Seattle has Mike Holmgren, whom Carr feels a bond with, and he could take the next year or two to help rebuild his confidence, which took its lumps in Houston.

Other teams believed to be interested in Chargers backup RB Michael Turner are Buffalo, Dallas and the New York Jets.

Don’t pay much mind to the talk about the Falcons trading for cornerback Deltha O’Neal. Cincy is not trading him. Plus, he is a left cornerback, where the Falcons’ already have a pretty good one in DeAngelo Hall. Bobby Petrino did say Atlanta likely will add a cornerback, but most likely through the draft.

Al Wilson was not at Dove Valley on Monday as the Broncos began their offseason workout program. Wilson's absence may be the beginning of the end of an eight-year relationship between the defensive captain and the team. Wilson's Denver-based agent, Peter Schaffer, simply said the situation remains in "flux." Schaffer downplayed Wilson's absence from the team Monday, saying Wilson is in Atlanta attending to a family matter.

I suspect the Panthers will continue to be patient and wait it out and that we’ll ultimately see some action around draft time. Keep in mind there’s some talk of Kansas City trading Trent Green to Cleveland, so that means Charlie Frye (who worked with new offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson last year) might become available.

In an effort to jumpstart the interest in him, Indianapolis free-agent safety Mike Doss has switched agents, hiring Drew Rosenhaus. And Rosenhaus wasted little time scheduling new visits for his client. Rosenhaus has Doss visiting the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday and the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. Doss' trip to Philadelphia will be a return engagement. The two sides visited earlier this offseason but were unable to work out a deal.

Free agent linebacker Ed Hartwell, considered of mild potential interest to the Patriots because of his size (6-foot-1, 250) and ability to play inside in a 3-4 defense, is expected to draw strong interest from the Denver Broncos if they part ways with linebacker Al Wilson.

Indications are the Titans are interested in acquiring Chargers running back Michael Turner, considered one of the NFL's most valuable backups. The Chargers tendered Turner at $2.35 million, with first- and third-round draft-pick compensation. What that means for the Titans: if they sign him to an offer sheet, and the Chargers don't match it, San Diego would receive Tennessee's first- and third-round picks in the April 28-29 draft. A trade is the better option for the Titans. They could work out a long-term contract and chances are they wouldn't have to part ways with the two high draft picks.

Free-agent receiver David Patten came to New Orleans for a visit Monday. The 5-10, 190-pounder was released by the Washington Commanders last month after two disappointing seasons. He caught 23 passes with no touchdowns while battling knee and hamstring injuries. Patten, 32, had his best career stretch as a part-time starter with the New England Patriots from 2001 to '04.

Mike Gandy, who played the past two years in Buffalo, signed a three-year deal. Financial terms were not announced. Gandy, 28, started 16 games at left tackle in 2005 and could compete for the starting job at that same position with the Cardinals. Gandy said the Cardinals have not decided where to play him. "I don't have any preferences," he said. "I've played left tackle a lot, so that's obviously where I'm more comfortable at."

Dre Bly took his physical and signed his extension Monday. He will begin working out with his new teammates today. "Spending the past four years in Detroit, it was like in the bottom of the barrel," he said. "Here, a 9-7 season won't be tolerated. There, 9-7, 10-6 is a great season. I am excited to be at a place that expects to win." Bly was acquired March 2 for running back Tatum Bell and offensive tackle George Foster, the first of eight players Denver obtained in the past month. They include running back Travis Henry and tight end Daniel Graham. "Travis Henry, Daniel Graham, these guys are great ballplayers," Bly said. "They are going to help us win a lot of games." Previous signs of discontent turned into a good dream as Bly explained how he and Bailey will be one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL. "I feel blessed," he said.

With NT Grady Jackson suing the team for allegedly releasing his medical records to some media last summer, that marriage appears to be unhealthy and the Falcons need to add somebody who can play and acquire someone who might be able to be an anchor on the D-line for years.

The Saints agreed to a one-year deal with safety Jay Bellamy last week, keeping him in New Orleans as he heads into his 14th NFL season. He likely will be competing for a backup job in a group that includes Josh Bullocks, Roman Harper, Kevin Kaesviharn and Steve Gleason. Bellamy, who turns 35 in July, joined the Saints as a free agent in 2001. He was released before the start of last season but rejoined the team after rookie safety Roman Harper suffered a knee injury in Week 5.

Free-agent offensive guard and ex-Lion Rick DeMulling has signed a one-year contract with the Colts, the team that drafted him in 2001, his agent, Ken Staniger , said. DeMulling signed with the Super Bowl champions so he could enjoy the game again, his agent said.

Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman Darrell Reid became the fourth player from the Super Bowl champions to be arrested this year when he was booked Saturday on three charges stemming from marijuana possession in his hometown of Freehold, N.J. Dominic Rhodes, Dexter Reid and DeDe Dorsey have also made the police blotter since Jan. 3.

The Broncos are working on bringing back punter Todd Sauerbrun. New England would have the right to match an offer, which likely would be a one-year deal.

Javon Walker's agent, Kennard McGuire, said Monday that Walker will participate in the offseason workout program. But McGuire has advised his client not to discuss the Jan. 1 shooting of Darrent Williams because he doesn't want Walker, who was sitting next to Williams in the limousine, to relive the experience.

Titans CB Pacman Jones is scheduled to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York and answer for his involvement in multiple off-field incidents since entering the league in 2005. What Goodell decides after the meeting will not only impact Jones, but the Titans, who are bracing for their best cornerback and return man to receive a lengthy suspension. Goodell is also scheduled to meet today with Bengals receiver Chris Henry, who's had multiple off-field issues as well. The commissioner plans to unveil a stricter personal conduct policy for NFL players in the coming weeks and is expected to announce a penalty for Jones within 10 days of today's meeting.

Michigan's LaMarr Woodley, one of the top defensive ends in the draft this year, is set to visit the Titans today. The 6-foot-2, 269-pounder was a consensus first-team All-American last season.

The Washington Commanders announced yesterday that they re-signed punter Derrick Frost. He accepted the team's one-year tender and will remain the punter after what was at times a turbulent 2006 season. That Frost will be brought back would have at first glance appeared something of a long shot. He was the Commanders' punter during the 2005 playoff run, but during training camp 2006 Washington brought in another punter, David Lonie, to compete with Frost.

Did You Know? Of the 97 players in this year's Pro Bowl, one was acquired via trade (Champ Bailey) and nine were free-agent signings. So 87 Pro Bowl performers were "homegrown talent" -- playing for the team that originally picked them up. Twenty-eight of the 37 different men who have won the Super Bowl MVP award had those performances for the teams that originally drafted them.

How About That? In the past 10 years, Arizona has had eight top-10 selections and Detroit has had seven -- and their combined record last season was 8-24. New England (one), Pittsburgh (one) and Indianapolis (two) have had a combined four top-10 picks over the past 10 years, and they have won five out of the past six Super Bowls.

The Steelers entertained two college prospects yesterday, the first day NFL rules permit players to visit teams before the April 28-29 draft. Running back Antonio Pittman of Ohio State and defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis of Hawaii spent time visiting the coaches and scouts at the Steelers' UPMC facility. Each team is permitted to have 30 player visits until April 20. The players normally do not work out during their visits; some take physicals.

Hey Hos, the Commanders did not get the memo! Funny that the one Pro Bowler obtained via trade was a Commander. That is too funny really.
