Do you guys remember how Romo started his career?

Lightning quick reads, get the ball out of his hands to the open guy. No favorite receiver.

Just like Dak's doing now.

Dak had some nice throws today, had a couple passes that zipped to Witten and one that was a nice precision pass to Beasley.

But it's the Browns, and they were starting a struggling rookie at QB. I'm glad they went with him instead of McCown. It's hard to evaluate anyone against the Browns, they are so bad.
agreed...if this was the only basis for evaluation I would say there'd still be a big question mark...thankfully we have more to go by than just a road win against a struggling team :)

Wait...what?

Dak barely had anyone within 5 feet of him most of the day.

Dak and the Cowboys use a lot of playaction and fakes. More than in the past.

What plays has Dak made "Romo plays and throws?"

I see Dak standing mostly with an eternity to throw and lots of playfakes and misdirection.

The TD pass to Witten in OT against Eagles was a great Romo homage.

I'd be interested to see what the % of playaction is this season compared to previously.

Off the top of my head, it actually looks like we're using more, not less.

Bingo! That worked. He didn't criticize Romo, though his last statement mentioning Romo was kind of vague. I didn't take it as a slight to Romo, though.
I think the reference to Romo towards the end was a comment about Dak's growth as a pocket passer...the first highlight (the rollout pass) was discussing how the Cowboys have been predominantly scheming for Dak (i.e., getting him on the move in bootlegs, waggles, etc., simplifying his reads to only half the field - which is smart with a young QB)...the second highlight was Dak making plays in the pocket standing up against pressure (a la Tony - thus the reference)...Mooch called that "the growth" in his commentary...i.e., that he's not just a "read half the field" QB.

I for one think he's been doing that all along to some extent but I think his struggles against Philly have raised this issue to a theme we'll hear discussed often going forward - how will Dak handle it when teams bring pressure? That second highlight was against a 6-man blitz. He looked great with players in his face and hands up to bat the ball/obscure his vision...he stood tall and delivered a strike. I am looking forward to him continuing to develop his recognition so that we can burn teams who try this strategy to rattle him and create havoc - I see our WRs taking some of those plays to the house. Wentz, by contrast, has struggled mightily against pressure (turnovers) the past few games...we started bringing it in the 4th quarter of our game and the Giants brought pressure from the outset of their game this past Sunday. And of course the Vikings created some havoc prior to that.

Exciting times...

My only issue and concern, so far, is like what Philly did to Dak. They brought tons of ones sure and Dak looked like a rookie for once. I'm worried about that when we get deeper into the season or playoffs. I have the upmost trust in this coaching alstaff, especially Lenihan, to coach Dak up on how to recognize blitzes and audible it of the play called.

Did you see the throw to Beasley on 3rd down in the face of a blitz and delivering the ball overhead while being hit...it was the best pass I've seen in Dallas in a long time. Hard throw, between two defenders, perfect timing and location, down the field, while being hit from blitz. That was some play!

Dak is #4 in passer rating, #2 in QBR and has led his team to a 7-1 record. That doesn't happen unless a quarterback is really good, I don't care who he's playing or who his teammates are. I don't get the eagerness to pick a successful rookie QB's game apart because he has good players around him. Heck, Dak has done his thing without a #1 receiving threat for the most part, something you can't say about Rothlissburger, Ryan, Brady or Carr, three of who are at the forefront of the MVP conversation at the halfway point.
That's the biggest thing in my opinion. Brady shouldn't be in the conversation because of cheating, missing 4 games and while he was out his team going 3-1 without him.....not most valuable when your team is 3-1 (coach of the year maybe)

Atlanta has Julio, Carr has Cooper and Crabtree, Ben has Brown but also Bell who some fools think he is the best RB in the game.

Dez just came back but Dak is winning with 65 year old Witten and 3 foot tall Beasley, and can't get out of bounds or catch with hands Williams. That to me is impressive.

I think the op misunderstood. Mariucci's point was that they were able to run a passing game without all the deception and care taken with a rookie.

His point on without the playaction was that dak was able to drop back and run the offense without needing a bootleg or run fake. It was just snap the ball under center and throw.

Why this comment is being celebrated as some sort of slight to room I am not quite sure, he was complimenting Prescott on his development.

I think Dak was nervous. Said it before the game he didn't look calm and collected as usually.....it's also the only game he throwing motions were all over the place and releasing the ball in crazy angles. Dak has faced pressure and blitz since preseason and hasn't struggled until the Philly game........he was nervous and had some rookie moments. Had nothing to do with not knowing the blitz

Today he said something that actually made alot of sense to me today.

He was going over reads for Dak in todays game and how he's looking over the field and hitting the open guy. And even staying in the pocket on blitzing downs and hitting his target with guys in his face. And then comes with his point.

Dak is making them Romo plays and throws that he's been known for, but doing it without the Playaction or fakes. So the play doesnt take as long to develop and the defense doesnt really have time to adjust.

That makes so much sense.

Well, considering we are in a TIMING-BASED offense that would imply they are giving Dak shorter routes... But they are running plenty of play action and bootlegs, so I have no idea what Mariucci is talking about.

They are basically running Linehan's offense now and Romo only played once in it, and that was when Linehan was the playcaller. Now he's the OC... And when Jason Garrett was in control of the offense, they were amongst the last in the league in using it.

There's only 2 relevant numbers, 7 and 1. The rest is garbage.

It was a good throw. He needs to fix those mechanics though. If not, I worry we'll see more throws like in Philly than like that one.

We are. Linehan has us taking advantage of the teams selling out to stop the run.
