NFL free agency 2013: Giants trying to re-sign Martellus Bennett

By T.J. Doyle on Mar 10 2013, 12:08p

The New York Giants are hoping to lock up tight end Martellus Bennett prior to the start of free agency on Tuesday. Via Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News:

The clock is ticking quickly with the free-agent market set to open on Tuesday afternoon, but the Giants haven't given up hope of signing their starting tight end.

It appears they are making a late - and possibly last - push to re-sign Martellus Bennett before the free agent signing period begins. The two sides have talked in the last few days, according to a source, and plan to talk more before the deadline.

Bennett, just 26 years old, is coming off a season in which he caught 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns. The former Dallas Cowboy signed a 1-year, $2.5 million contract with New York last offseason. The athletic tight end could have several suitors when free agency opens, so it makes sense that the team would try to get a Bennett deal done before Tuesday.

Giants have some cap constraints of their own to deal with. It's looking like Cruz might be in play next offseason for somebody...

I really doubt he will have teams knocking down his door.

All the complaining he did about being behind Witten; and by the end of last year Eli was ignoring him because he was - SURPRISE- unreliable.

he does but the giants are looking for cheap players right now. Since I really doubt that he is going to get much money tossed his way they probably figure that even an unreliable TE is better then none.

He's been sounding off on Twitter about not feeling the love from the Giants. I think he thought they would have signed him by now.

This is what he had to say on Twitter last month:

"I've come to the conclusion that we are just temporary investments to the owners. Value money and growth over players."

He thinks he can get 6 mil a year on the open market. We will sign him once he realizes he is worth no more than 3 mil a year. In Reese we trust

In a talent rich TE pool, it's odd to me that the Giants seemingly want this guy so badly, especially considering the way they utilize their tight ends. I feel like they can make any TE work.

Just read on twitter he's signed to play for Chicago.

We might keep an eye on that -- we liked their other TE last year

I am thinking of the combination of Cutler and Marty B and am really smiling. That could be interesting to watch.

If he was that unreliable then why would the Giants want to get him resigned?
