I don't know if this has been mentioned here or not... but Mat McBriar is leading the NFL in punting.
His gross average per punt is 50.8 yards (the only punter over 50) with a long of 62 yards. He isn't leading in net punting... but he's only 1.1 yards behind the leader.
What the stats on NFL.com don't reflect is that his 62 yard punt was without any roll... it went that entire way in the air! Other punters have somepunts over 60 yards... but you know those had good rolls to get there. Also, NFL.com doesn't reflect hang time either. I'd bet that McBriar has the best hang time in the NFL by far. He just absolutely bombs his punts.
You know that Parcells loves having a punter like that, the way he loves to win the field position battle. Between McBriar and our defense, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we lead the NFL in scoring defense.
Right now we're ranked near the middle of the pack in scoring D (14th) and we're ranked in the top ten in total defense (8th)... however, with only two games played, that kickoff return really hurts our ranking on scoring D. Had we not allowed Cartwright to score on that kickoff, we'd be several spots higher. Take away a few penalties that kept drives alive like Ware's and Williams' roughing the QB calls and Ayodele's uneccessary roughness call, and you'd see a lot better ranking as well.
I think that our first game against Jacksonville will end up being unusual, defensively, because we had to get in the swing of things. The Washington game, IMO, is more like our defense will play all year. As the year goes on, I think Dallas' rankings will creep upwards until we're at or near the top in both scoring and total defense.
Overall, I think that the Dallas D is still maturing (not just Pat Watkins) and that they'll be just plain dominating by mid-season. Throw in McBriar pinning teams back deep and I think that we're going be allowing very, very few points this season, which should translate into wins if we have any offense at all.
