Personally i dont think jerry jones is interested in matt jones, but you never know.

The player rep for free agent Matt Jones says the NFL has notified him that Jones will not be suspended for violating a court-mandated drug program in March.

The agent says Jones only has to pay a $50,000 fine. If so, Jones should find work quickly. He's easily the best young receiver on the market. "He caught 65 passes in 12 games last year for the Jaguars and he was their No. 1 receiver," agent Dave Butz pointed out. "If he wasn't hurt one game and didn't have the three-game suspension, he may have caught 80 to 90 balls."

Former first-round pick Matt Jones, a free agent receiver who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, has been notified he will not be suspended as the result of his violation of a court-mandated drug program, his agent said.

Jones was informed by the NFL last week that he will be fined $50,000 but not suspended. Even then, the NFL Players Association has convinced Jones to appeal the fine, according to Dave Butz, his agent.

Jones was suspended for the final three games of the 2008 season after he lost a league appeal stemming from his arrest for cocaine possession last July. In that case, Jones entered an Arkansas drug diversion program but was sent to jail for five days in March as punishment for drinking alcohol; Jones told the court he had "two beers" during a golf outing, a violation of the conditions placed upon him.

The Jaguars released him shortly thereafter.

An NFL spokesman declined to comment Tuesday, a standard response until the appeal process runs its course. Regardless, Jones will not face a suspension for the 2009 season if he is signed by an NFL team.

"That's the main message -- that Matt will be available to any team looking for a proven receiver," Butz said.

Asked about the perception that Jones has been "a bust," Butz countered, "Well, he caught 65 passes in 12 games last year for the Jaguars and he was their No. 1 receiver. If he wasn't hurt one game and didn't have the three-game suspension, he may have caught 80 to 90 balls.

"In his first two years, he was the third most productive receiver of his rookie class, despite some musical chairs at quarterback. So that 'bust' tag isn't fair, at all."

Jones has been training hard for six hours a day during the offseason, Butz said.

"He wants to prove himself all over again," Butz said. "He has stated very clearly that he regrets some decisions he's made but he's moving forward. I mean, the Jaguars didn't cut him after the [arrest] last summer. They saw a different guy; there was just a different reaction when he had the two beers. I see a guy who's very hungry to make a strong contribution to a team."

While Jones is "eager to turn the page," the agent explained why he is appealing the $50,000 fine, payable if he is employed again by a team.

"The [players] union believes the league has no right to fine Matt any money because the substance abuse policy won't allow it," Butz said. "In the letter the league sent, it seemed to cite personal conduct but the union believes because it involved alcohol, it should have kicked back to the substance abuse policy without penalty."

How in god's name is he not going to be suspended? Didn't one of our coached get 5 games for taking a banned substance that was helping him cope with diabetes? Did I miss something?

...and I'd throw up if we took Jones. Then I'd bottle it and send it to Jerry.

Guilty confession:

A part of me wishes we'd bring him in. If he doesn't work hard or just acts lazy, cut him. He has tons of talent, though.

I know. :eek::

I cannot believe he was not suspended. Roger Goodell has some serious questions to answer.
1. James harrison arrested for wife beating
2. Santonio Holmes arrested for drug issue
3. M.Jones has an alcohol problem.

4. Wade Wilson uses a prescribed cock riser(due to diabetes) and gets 5 games. Go figure.

JJ's surprised me this off-season.

I don't see him bringing in M Jones after everything he's (JJ's) done to clean out the locker room. And for guys who may have a drug/alcohol problem, I think JJ would be esp cautious.

It's getting hard to read JJ, though.

Iam all for signing him and I think the Cowboys will. What a perfect complement to Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, and Miles Austin. Plus Jones would give us 2 serious field strechers paired with Austin. Jones would be around other razorback teamates also in Hamlin and Felix Jones. And dont forgot Jerry Jones is a Razorback. I say go get him and give him a try. Its not like hes a cancer to a locker room or anything.

I agree. I don't think it will happen, either.

The thing is, if you clean out your locker room of the malcontents and the locker room lawyers, you can occasionally take a chance on a guy like this. And Jones isn't any kind of team disruptor. He's just lazy, or has been. Maybe this episode scared him straight. He did do a lot better last year at Jax IIRC.

I dunno, the Giants just reached in the draft for a 6-6 WR that only played low-level competiton and that couldn't come within 10 yards of Jones in a 40 yard dash. It would be kind of cool to get a talent like that for free.

I know it still won't happen, and maybe it shouldn't. I'd kind of like to see it, though.

I highly doubt Crayton and Austin would agree with the "complimentary" part.

Why don't we just invite their moms to camp too? They can hold their hands on the sideline.

How could we forget? Anytime a Razorback is mentioned, this is the "obvious destination".

True...and if someone is feeling a little sluggish, he can get them an eightball for a quick pick me up!

....please no. :)

I'm wondering how JJ sells it to the lockerroom, media, fans, etc.?

I guess JJ could say that M Jones went through a difficult phase in his life, and he is straighted out (fingers crossed) and is not a habitual alcoholic/drug user and is not a locker room problem.

I don't know . . . .

While I don't think JJ would do it, it wouldn't shock me either.

That said, I think WR is a weak spot for us on offense.

Wait. Didn't Matt Jones get arrested?

Didn't the commish say that he would punish those whose actions tarnish the reputation of the league?

Doesn't getting arrested for treating your nose in public tarnish the league's reputation?

Shouldn't that warrant a suspension or does 2 and 2 not equal 4 in this case for whatever reason?

This guy is not as good as Miles Austin or Patrick Crayton and it's debatable that he's better than Sam Hurd at this point so how could he help us?

Say what you want pal, but I bet Matt Jones is a Cowboy when its all said and done. You really havent done your homework on Jones, your just going on the ESPN perception you rely on....Matt Jones had a terrible passing game around him the entire time in Jacksonville. I dont believe the lazy crap about him either. I watched him play at Arkansas and Jacksonville and he's made alot of plays considering how terrible the Jag's Qb's are.

I'd be lazy too if I played for that crappy city, with crappy fans that cant fill their stadium week in, and week out. I bet he did drugs to get out of that hell-hole of a place. LoL
