Matt Mosley: Carson Wentz or Dak Prescott will be Cowboys' future quarterback

Either Jerry Jones is trying to talk himself out of taking a quarterback early in the NFL draft or he's running a misdirection play. For now, I'll go with the latter scenario.

He seemed open to the idea of selecting a quarterback No. 4 overall in the immediate aftermath of a 4-12 season. Jones seemed inspired by the thought of identifying his next franchise quarterback. But over the weekend, Jerry told reporters at the NFL combine that he only had eyes for a quarterback already on his roster.

"What is the one unequivocal fact that you can count on relative to the preparation of this draft and on draft day is that I'm planning on [Tony] Romo being the quarterback for the next four or five years," Jones said. "That's a fact. You won't see a decision on draft day that will fly in the face of not believing, from our standpoint, that he'll be our quarterback for four or five years."

Someone said it one day and man everyone has jumped on that in the media.

The only thing I can figure is that they got the idea that if Jones doesnt take someone in the first they will take a different QB and Prescott was a Capt most of his years in college and one of his best features according to most reviews I have read is that he is a leader and no red flags as far as character issues.

So...who knows.

Seems like if the Cowboys really did like him this much they would start blowing smoke and leaking info to get the media off of him and onto someone else.

I don't see any QB at #34 with the likelihood that a D-lineman with a 1st round grade is likely to fall. Derrick Henry is a possibility too. Certainly before Prescott I would think.

Dak Prescott, as you said, meets all the Cowboys' requirements for a selection, though. He's apparently an infectious leader with a great personality of high character, and he's one of the hardest working guys in the room. Work ethic, leadership, character, love of the game = RKG.

Knowing Jerry, he would actually try to go for a running QB. We already had our Quincy Carter. I wouldn't doubt he would try again.

The only way I would ever take a running QB is if I didn't even have any QB on the roster and the only QB in the draft was a running QB. Otherwise, give me a pro style QB or give me death.

I feel like people say this every year the last few years.......... man, too many teams need QBs for that guy to slide.......... and then the draft comes and guys people think would be long gone like Bridgewater and Geno Smith somehow start sliding.

At this point, after Wentz or Goff, I think it's not out of the realm of possibility that someone like Lynch starts sliding.

Listen I know our Owner/GM/Head Coach/Trainer/PR Man/Doctor is a first ballot hall of fame idiot with his own designated wing when it comes to football but when he doesn't do the right thing and draft Carson of Bismarck at 1, I would love to hear his nonsensical response as to why he was ready to draft a QB two years ago when that fraud Manziel was there but not ready now with he who was foretold to us.

I think a team that needs QB help right now would be better off with Cook over Lynch..

2 or 3 years from now though it could be a huuuge mistake to take Cook over Lynch.
