Maturation Of a Cowboy CB

Oh Jerry is very into that. Trying to steal a player.

How many times have we heard (enter name) would have been a first rounder if not for (enter reason), and the ‘reason’ ends up still being a problem.
Our FO also continues that obsession with trades.

Guys like Kenneth Murray, Kaiir Elam, Trey Lance and Jonathan Mingo are recent examples where we traded for guys with “first round talent”. (Mingo was drafted a 2nd rounder but Cowboys had him as a “first rd talent”) Lance and Mingo cost us 4th round Cowboys picks in back to back drafts.

You're comparing different eras. Back then, there was no Salary Cap or Free Agency, so teams could stockpile talent without worrying about a cap or players defecting to other teams. You could afford then to let someone sit and develop.

Ideally you should let them develop, but nowadays the trend is play them immediately. Depth to develop them correctly is often nonexistent.

Didn't Isaac Holt later go on to play for the Rams? Or am I mistaking the name for someone else?

Ah, nevermind. I'm thinking Holt the receiver. Was Terry Holt.

I think the more practical way to go Sunday night is Caelon Carson opposite Bland . Justin Jefferson might smoke Revel in a brace and be gone to the house . Detroit was a preview of that . Play Steward in the slot with Revel as depth . Revels day will come it’s just that the margin of error on 2025 is now zero .

But I wonder if we should compare Revel to another Cowboys player from years ago - Charlie Waters. Waters first played CB and he was not very good. But they moved him to S where he excelled. Revel has the size to play S and he seems willing to tackle. I wonder if the Cowboys might consider moving him next year.

Charlie Waters was an overall superior athlete with off the chart football instincts, but his 40 speed was too slow for CB in the NFL. Revel cannot be judged by his rookie baptism. But he does have the speed for the NFL CB position. However, I agree with you that he also could be a great free safety.

...

you know like Troy Aikman, People were ready to give up on him, we didn't have forums, SM, Internet, back then, but I remember the talk about his backup, and how he looks so bad his rookie year, and even shaky, a little bit his second year, They were talking about him being a bust. lmao

Jimmy Johnson once got drunk in 1989 and said Steve Walsh was better than Aikman and Aikman was a loser. Walsh played on a great Miami Hurricanes team and had great coaching, which made him more NFL ready, especially with Jimmy's UM coaches coming to Dallas. In reality, like most great QB's, and for Troy, it takes a few years for them to get to that great level. Walsh had a weak throwing arm and Jimmy traded him to the Saints in a heist of all time, for a #1, #2, and a #3. Troy took us three times in 4 years to the promised land and if RT Erik Williams did not get drunk and break his leg, we would have won 4 in a row.

It's a great point though in that today, Jerry would start Pup immediately because he's a first rounder and a "talent."

Which of course he was. But Jerry underestimates coaching and intangibles. He thinks talent is all that matters, and the over-optimistic wildcatter in him always sees the talent playing to its full potential right away.

Let's make a comparison between a #1 pick in the 1992 draft, CB Kevin Smith out of Tex A & M and Shavon Revel, a claimed first round talent taken in the 2025 draft in the 3rd round due to a knee injury.

Kevin Smith was a speedy CB who holds A & M's all-time interception record, a three year starter, 1st team All American in 1991, 20 career interceptions in 3 college years and was a great punt returner. This was described about him: "Exceptional speed and great ball instincts allowed Kevin Smith to control the perimeter, helping Texas A&M lead the nation in total defense in 1991." He was named the Nation's Top Defensive Back in 1991 and was a semifinalist for Defensive Player of the Year and the Thorpe Award. He was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. He started three full years.

He was drafted by Jimmy Johnson, # 17 in the 1st round. Ahead of him was veteran holdover Isaac Holt, who had come from the Vikings in the Herschel Walker trade, but who lost speed and flexibility.

Jimmy Johnson did not throw Kevin Smith to the wolves as a rookie. He practiced against Michael Irvin, Alvin Harper and Kelvin Martin. After 10 weeks of of the season, Jimmy believed that Kevin Smith was ready. He inserted him at the LCB position. He was like glue to opposing receivers. He had tremendous catch up speed. He played to a very high level, including in the victorious Super Bowl against the Buffalo Bills' potent offense.

This is the way you bring along certain rookies, not throw them immediately onto the field as starters. This is even though Kevin Smith was a national superstar and well worthy and well-earned as a #1 pick for the rising Jimmy Johnson squad

Shavon Revel had only 15 career starts at East Carolina, hardly a major football team. He is recovering from major surgery. He has been thrown to the wolves as soon as he was medically cleared to play in a game because the Boys' CB play has been terrible. Revel may have great size and good coverage skills, but he is greatly inexperienced. In the old days, he may not have played for two years, just being used on special teams. Many rookie CB's are made to look like fools in their first year when they are thrown to the wolves.

Everson Walls and Daron Bland are the exceptions as rookies who excelled in their first years.

Revel needs a lot more seasoning, as he is very inexperienced.

Touting him as some CB savior this year is unearned, unjustified. 15 college starts is nothing!

He follows in a long line of high Cowboys' draft picks of players who were injured, Bruce Carter, Sean Lee, Jaylon Smith.

It is no secret that in the 2021 draft, the Boys targeted CB Pat Surtain and not LB Micah Parsons. Surtain was a multi-year starter for Alabama and the son of a former All-Pro CB. He has become one of the NFL's best. Top corners are usually found in the first two rounds.

In the 1992 draft, the Boys had two #1's and two #2's. Out of these 4 picks, Jimmy Johnson needed DB's, selecting Kevin Smith with their first #1, Darren Woodson in the second round and failed CB Clayton Holmes in the 3rd round. With no 2nd and 3rd round picks this year, it will be hard to grab a top corner when a full-sized DE and LB are needed even more.

Thats what i wrote in another post of mine.

An GM whos ego is determined to prove everybody but himself how great of a draft guru he is needs Revel to start way too early.

I just hope the guy has the resilence and intellect to understand whats going on.

Just three more years Revel and you are out of this trash of an once proud franchise. Just keep your head up and hopes high.
