Somewhere the Spurs are laughing. The Dallas Mavericks complaining about late fouls ? And free throws deciding games ? Are you kidding?
How quickly they forget the gift they were given in game 3, when Dirk stepped on Tim's foot, but Duncan amazingly called for his 6th foul. A minute later, game on the line, Dirk bailed out with a call, sent to the line to win it with free throws with 7 seconds left. Or in game 4, the ticky tack call on Bruce even before any shot attempt, sending Dirk to the line with 8 seconds left, and it sent the game to overtime. Dirk also decided 2 games against Phoenix with late free throws.
Now we shouldn't be surprised at Cuban. Four billion dollars can't buy class. But AJ? He's better than that. It's his fault the Mavs butchered that time out last night. And he should throw Josh Howard or the referees under the bus for his mistake. Hating to lose is one thing. Being a sore loser is another. It's easy to be a class act when everything goes right. It's tougher when it's falling apart. Ask the Spurs. That's why somewhere the Spurs are laughing.

Can we stop the madness?

I was/am a Spurs fan long before most of you Spurs fans around here...

I am Mavs 1, Spurs 1a... I hate whiny incidents and players, and the Spurs are among the worst in the league...

I like Duncan alot and appreciate his game, but there is perhaps no bigger whiner in the league. If Spurs fans don't see that, then they are guilty of the same thing they are accusing Mavs fans of...

The same thing many are accusing Mavs fans of is the same thing they are still complaining about one month later...

Fans are fanatics... pure and simple...

I am a big Mavs fan but you haven't seen me complaining even though I thought the officiating was poor... not just in this series, but in the playoffs in general...

Face it, refs in this league give a pass to those considered superstars, while the blue-collar players get screwed... it happened in pretty much every series in the playoffs...

Sorry but this argument is completely circular. I can't tell if you're saying, "Yeah see the refs suck... they screwed the Spurs," or "the Mavs and their fans need to stop whining."

Either way, the Spurs and their fans did more than their share of whining. And now that the Mavs and their fans do some whining, it's suddenly ridiculous and embarrassing??

In the same post you say the Mavs must be kidding -- they shouldn't be complaining about the refs -- then complain about the refs from the Spurs-Mavs series. I guess Spurs fans can't be hypocrites, just Mavs fans??

I think the difference is the Cuban factor. Fans will be fans, but crying about the officials is top down in the Mav organization.

In the end it really doesn't matter....it's all about the Scoreboard.

The point is the Spurs dont cry when they lose to the press. Pop never crys about a player they are facing to try to force the refs hand.

Cuban is trash ...... and he has rubbed off on Avery.

Yeah, i hate that Duncan whines almost all the time but i can understand why some Spurs fans are saying some of the stuff because some Mavs fans said the same thing during the Spurs series.

you should read the SA Express News more often.
not only are they laughing about it (or, glad about it, at least)....they are saying so. Horry, in particular, was put off by all the whining and crying the mavs did.

and why not....oooooooo, the mavs beat the spurs in round 2.
good for you.

the spurs win titles.

sorry bro, but no real spurs fan would admit to also being a mavs fan. what is this 1 and 1a BS???? :laugh1: pick a side!

and if you can't see that tim duncan and the spurs are one of the classiest franchises from top to bottom in ALL of sports (let alone the nba) then you aren't paying attention.

You don't think Pop has influence on the refs?? Puhlease. It may not be in the press, but that's not the only way to try to influence those guys. Every one acts like Popovich is a saint, but he's made plenty of subtle complaints about the refs in the media... remember the DFisher shot?... and he definitely has had run-ins with refs during games. Everyone does. Spare me the high and mighty attitude.

If you don't have issues with refs every now and then you're not human. It's prefectly normal to get agitated when you feel you've been wronged.

On a side note, did anyone else hear the stat on BaD radio today?? Wade shot 97 Free Throws in this series. Remember that Jordan guy?? Yeah the most he ever had in a NBA finals series was in the 70s.

I agree. While it's clear that Tim complains about calls a lot during games, I've NEVER heard him whine about officiating after a game or call out the refs.

When it comes to whining, Mark Cuban is in a class all to himself, and he has the fines to prove it!

At what point does it become whining for you?? My point is, it's a completely subjective standard. One thing I think everybody can agree on is that NBA refs have to be the most inconsistent of all the officials in every league.

So if this is the case, why is Cuban the only person trying to change it?? Is it whining, or is it his desire to have a better product?? MSNBC did a poll asking fans if they thought the NBA was rigged. The results... 55% of Americans believe that it is. 55%!! Or in other wirds, 45% think the NBA is legit. You could probably find 20-30% of people who believe that WWE is real!!

If this is the public perception, how do you change that?? Does the NBA want to change the perception? I know I'm not going to sit here and fault Cuban for wanting things to change. Did he go overboard after Game 5? Maybe, but he is way more invested than any of us fans are, so who are we to judge?

So if the NBA ever does "get better" in the public eye, and changes, who are we going to credit?? I know one of the first people I will give credit to is Mark Cuban. I'm not going to sit here and complain about him.

It's one thing to try to get calls to go your way during a game, and even, to an extent, for a coach to make a point after a game.

It's another altogether when, after every loss, your focus is on every single call that went against you, to the point of blaming the loss primarily on the calls. That is what I consider whining, and poor sportsmanship.

Sure, when I'm watching the Cowboys play, I get mad when bad calls go against them. I may complain during the game about it and even hold over some of it afterwards.

But then take all that, and multiply it by 10, and you get what we know around here as "R*dskin-fan" levels. Where every marginal call is scrutinized and obsessed over. Every loss is blamed on a handful of calls by the officials. League-wide conspiracy theories are spoken of. Agendas of refs who have it out for your squad.

We've seen it time and again from R*dskin fans, and it is annoying, unsportsmanlike, and downright mockable.

Like it or not, during this playoff series, I've seen many of the Mavs fans start sounding like the R*dskin fans.

Every fan is entitled to get upset over bad calls that go against your team. Heck, if the Spurs had been in the finals, and Wade got that kind of love from the refs, I'd be mad too! But the CONSTANT complaining and blame-laying just got over the top at times.

So at what point does it become whining? When you stop being a fan and start sounding like a R*dskins fan. Mavs fans... you DO NOT want to become the Skins fans of the NBA. :p:

I agree, but it's hard to imagine the Mavs can be compared with the Commanders after ONE GAME!

The only game you're referring to is Game 5, and the only calls are the ones made in the last 9.2 seconds of that game. No other calls (made by a referess) were honestly challenged. The Stack suspension was a decision made by Stu Jackson. And did you see Cuban after Game 6? Cheering the Heat. Obviously some facetiousness involved there, but did he complain about any calls after Game 6?? Nope.

In his blog, he won't even talk about it. Here's a direct quote from today's blog.

And for the record, I have nothing to say about the finals. That was last season.
For the record, Im not turning on comments, they have devolved to the point where they add no value.

Sorry... I didn't realize you were the team loyalty czar... I can root for who i want... and I do... no conflicts with me here...

I never said the Spurs weren't classy... I just stated the fact that Duncan whines too much on the court... it has gotten ridiculous...

I didn't even bother watching a single game of the finals after a journalist (or whoever it was) gave the edge in coaching to Avery Johnson.

I mean, I love Avery, but C'MON!

Just cuz you're a fan of both teams doesn't mean all Mavs fans and all Spurs fans have to hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

Ok so you're a fan of both teams, congratulations. Now let the other fans argue with eachother all they want. What's the point in rivalries if the fans of opposing teams aren't gonna talk trash to eachother?

I'm a Texas and Texas A&M fan, you don't see me saying "STOP IT! Can't we all just get along?"

I dont know about DVDs, but I know the NBA pre-makes T-shirts for both teams just to be ready to sell them. The T-shirts that have the losing team on them get shipped off to kids in foreign Countries through The NBA Cares Foundation. They had a long article about this on either DMN.com or MSNBC.com a day or two ago.
