He also only had one year of good production, when was the last time a guy with one year of good production managed to surpass a bunch of tested guys (only after the season was over, mind you) and become talked about as the #1 receiver?

This must be a particularly weak receiver class for something like that to happen.

If you mean by tested that the best they ever did was mediocre then you have a point. Other than Hardy, none of the other top WR broke 850 yards last season. This is college where they should be dominating more than half the CBs they go up against if they truly are elite

Sweed, Jackson and Kelly took a step back. Thomas was a JUCO transfer, did not get playing time in 2006 (he did have a 16.9 YPC though) and absolutely busted out when given a chance this past season. Its not like he was given chances and failed.

What i find interesting is small school guys like DRC can shoot up the charts on measurables but a guy who played like that as the only offensive option in a school in the big ten is just discarded for only having one season of production. If he had two season of 650 yards before this year he would be the concensus number 1 and a top 10 pick. Just doesnt make sense to me.

i would LOVE for us to get this guy.

Mayock could also be considering the 3-5 kids McFadden has and the two off-field fights.

The last `omg he'll make history` back was Reggie Bush and ... well... he isn't even a starter.

Be very careful in being so certain of these non-traditional players. The molds are there for a reason.

McFadden should be a heck of an NFL player but right now he is by far the player most overrated by fans. Well, perhaps he is surpassed by CJ in some circles.

McFadden is taller and leaner than you'd like your starting RB to be, he is not a great receiver out of the backfield and his college workload was significant with over 300 attempts as a junior.

All of that just adds up to special player but one who may need to be used specifically(somewhat like Reggie Bush) as opposed to as say Tomlinson.

As a to productivity, Mendenhall was every bit as good as a junior. He ended up with more TDs on about 60 less carries, averaged more yards per carry, had more receptions and lead a crappy team to a huge improvement.

And their schedules were actually equitable this year. The SEC is the better league but SEC and Big 10 teams play a rather round robin schedule and Illinois played the best Big 10 teams while Arkansas missed some toughies in the SEC. Illinois getting Missou in non-conference helped boost their degree of dificulty as well.

Mayock seems to be the most reliable of the draft experts in my opinion. Just because he doesn't share the same opinion as other draft experts doesnt make him wrong. Time will tell.

I'd like to think you don't truly believe it's that simple. You think Devin Thomas dominated because he caught a bunch of passes? If that's the case, Jordy Nelson should be a 1st round talent with 122 catches and over 1,600 yards. Or is it just because Thomas ran the 40 faster?

Sweed got hurt, I don't consider that a step back. Players get injured. Jackson, I always felt, was overrated (but I admit a personal bias against small receivers) and Kelly's average ypc was the same, if not a little better. He caught 13 less passes than the year before but only scored one less TD.

Not to mention stats never even begin to tell the whole story.

I don't make the charts, I don't agree with people that think all of a sudden DRC is a guaranteed top 15 pick. But even a guy like DRC at least has four years of production to look at and analyze to go with his workout numbers.

How on earth would Devin Thomas be a top 10 pick with 650 yards the year before? You're making him sound like Calvin Johnson at this point. The kid is not flawless.

Simply put, I don't believe in spending a 1st round pick on a guy you've only seen produce for one year. 2nd round, I'm fine, but not first.

I'm positive that I looked at this on Thursday and he had DRC as the #2 CB. So he moved Talib from #3 to #2 over DRC.
