In reality, I think we lose sight of the fact that transitioning to a new team — a new offense or defense — takes some players longer than others. A lot of the time they have to throw out what they've been taught to do in a different scheme.

Now, this scheme is supposed to be line friendly, but that doesn't mean there isn't a curve. Thornton mentioned at the beginning of the year how he was still trying to learn the scheme.

He deserved to be cut 4 weeks ago when he was on inactive list for consecutive games. He has been a completely different player since given a second chance. I was down on this signing but if he helps us win a ring I will gladly eat my crow.
Yeah but you don't cut someone who's learning a new scheme. If you guys had your way Mayowa, Mo, Dez, McFadden would all be cut. Dak would be sitting on the bench if you guys had your way.

And sadly in this league most guys dont get the chance to even show anything. Cowboys have a lot of guys on this team who took some time to develop and are finally coming on now. Cowboys patience with their players is a big part of why we are 13-2.

I think the Cowboys pass rush plan is finally starting to take shape and Mayowa (along with Irving's) late season surge has everything to do with it. I was surprised to see him having 6 sacks. He's shaping up to be this years version of Jeremy Mincey in 2014 which was a real contributor for the Cowboy's pass rush. Now hopefully the time off can get Lawrence and Crawford right, and another game can get Gregory some rhythm.

Any combination of Mayowa , Irving, T. Crawford , Lawrence and Gregory in the Dallas dime defense on passing downs could be a lethal weapon in the playoffs.

Not sure who you mean by "you guys" but I've only been critical of Mayowa because he was a thumb in the dam solution. And even as good as he's been playing, he's still not an ideal starter on a championship D, more of a rotation guy.

He has definitely improved. He may not start next year (or earn his scheduled salary) but he could be a very good backup at RDE next year. I put Gregory in the same category but there is obviously a lot more risk with him.

His salary for next year is 1.5 million. Don't see how this is prohibitive in any way. Not really all that expensive for a guy who has given the team 6 sacks this year while improving week to week.

Then Irving, and even Shaneil Jenkins, are even more special for being able to produce immediately. Irving didn't have more than a day or two of practice when he earned game time AND produced, same with Jenkins.

Cowboys need to sign AND retain more of those kind of players asap. Starting with re-signing Shaneil Jenkins.

He got a signing bonus of 3.3 Million so his cap hit next year is 2.6MM. I agree with you in general but IMO he will be overpaid somewhat as a backup at that price.

That said, if he plays the entire 2017 season like he has in the last three games he will definitely be worth his salary. Also with more time to evaluate him and plan, Marinelli may be able to use him better next season.

You need rotational guys on championship defenses. Broncos had a few....

Still need to see more before I'm convinced, but it's definitely nice to see some young, cheap players show that they might have what it takes to play in this league. I still think we need to address the DL and especially DE heavy in the offseason. I want our DL to be like our OL - top heavy and deep at the same time. We were top heavy but not very deep in our days of Ware and Ratliff. And we're currently showing signs of having some guys who could round out a good rotation. But we still don't have that guy that offenses have to game plan around. Closest signs to that have been Irving these past two weeks, but I don't feel comfortable putting all our eggs in the Irving basket.

Not necessarily. It just clicks with some players earlier than it does others. Some come in with better work habits, in better shape and don't have to learn how to do things right. That doesn't mean the ones who get it earlier will go on to have better careers.

The guy has had that up & down season, but he's now averaging 1 sack for every 57 snaps... That's a very respectable ratio.

..and just think...these guys who are stepping up are really still fresh at this point in the season for us. They're probably starting to see and feel what they can do and achieve on this level. May be starting to even feel themselves a little bit. I hope so.
