Before this thread gets slammed. Think if this is your money we are playing with. How much would it take to sign MBIII?

If you were JJ, you love to sign him to a reasonable 4 yr deal since in your mind he's your power back in a two back system but you don't really want to break the bank. Also, you see that this is going to be a very good and deep draft for RB compare to the past 5 years. Should you tender MBIII a 1st and 3rd round offer this yr unless he comes at a bargain and see how the draft pans out? If it happens that a highly touted back falls, you pick him up and see how he performed along with MBIII. If your drafted back turns out to be Mendenhall, Rice or someone who is durable and also a home run threat, now you have options with MBIII.

What would you do??

I tender him at the 1st and 3rd level and if someone gives him huge money, I take the picks. I don't think that will happen. I then see whats available at my picks in the draft while working on a sensible deal for Barber. If he is not going to ever be a fulltime RB, I wouldn't break the bank for him, especially right before a RB rich draft. 5 years @ $25 million is as high as I would go.

I'd sign Barber to a good contract, while bringing in someone equal to what Jone was thought to be. I don't think Barber's style lends itself to a long term career, and if he goes down, Rice would be a good backup. Barber needs to be spelled during a game. I liked him when he was used in the red zone , and spelled in the middle of the field.

Barber will get a 1st and 3rd round tender. In the NFL of today, you need two good backs even if we get McFadden somehow, you still want Barber.

In fact if we could somehow swing Felix Jones also, so much the better.

Look at the NFL this year, if your best back went down and you didn't have a quality backup you were done. And this year there were teams that had two good backs go down.

Barber is worth the money. Sign him.

I agree. Barber is a good back but not a special back. He's simply doesn't have the burst through the hole that's necessary to move him into the upper echelon RBs.

who would trade MB III for Maurice Jones-Drew?

I would in a NY second. Damn that's kids quick and slippery. He can return kicks, punts and play RB. I've been watching him since his UCLA days. He's amazing. He is perfect in a two back...

I would sign him to the 1st and 3rd tender. I really do not think another team would sign him to an offer sheet due to losing the two picks. Draft picks are such a needed commodity with the salary cap.

This isn't a trade Barber topic but I still believe Jones-Drew is a better back. You are entitled to your own opinion.

First and third and see how the draft pans out. I like Barber, but I'd like to have someone to complement him long term.

I'm curious to see what Turner from SD gets offered.

I feel the same way. However, if the team is drafting 25-32....things would get interesting. But overall, this is a very strong RB draft. You can get a pretty good back in the 2nd and maybe even 3rd so not sure if someone is willing to fork over $$$ and 1st and 3rd.

Not only that, but we'd get a chance to see what he can do in the full-time role. There's really no reason at all to sign him longterm at the moment.

Long term deals for RBs are very much a thing of the past. Unless the guy is really special, his career usually consists of a few good years and then mediocre production.

Most RBs are guys to be ridden until they drop, then discarded for a fresh horse.

Turner hasn't done much to raise his stock this year.

He should go to Jacksonville because he's a JAG

I love MB3 but it would be fun to play with three first round picks. 6 first day picks in total.

Sounds about right, especially if you backload the contract.

You are dead on the money. No sane team will offer a 1 & 3 round pick. I would just pay the 2.35 mil for a 1 year deal, then draft a back @22. The player who would be available at 22 should be more talented than Barber. But that spot should pay 10 mil over 5 years. which avg's out to 2 mil per season. Thats much cheaper than what Barber will want. Jonathan Stewart could play with MB3 for 1 year while we evaluate him at a potential starter in 2009. If it appears that for some reason he couldn't handle the role then you still have an operatunity to sign mb3 to a long term deal. We as fans need to lern to become attached to the production of the team and not individual players. My favorite RB is whoever is wearing the star on the helmet, its business never personal!
