His Cultness:

Injuries, attrition and a historically bad output in 2013 all pointed to another down year for the Dallas defense. Instead, they're a top-10 unit and a big part of the team's 6-1 start. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli provided SB Nation with some insight in a one-on-one interview.

Rod Marinelli arrived home late Wednesday night after another taxing day of molding his Dallas Cowboys defense. The end of a day for Marinelli sounds a lot like the beginning of one. He would work later into the night at home. Yet, his voice over the phone was still packed with sunrise-like verve.

He keeps managing this zest through 65 years of life, 44 years of marriage and 42 years of coaching.

When you talk to him about coaching longevity, he talks about the privilege. When you ask him about being a Vietnam War Army veteran, he says he just leaves that "where it should be," despite the fact that his bark and his blueprint as a defensive coordinator are in part woven through that experience.

Talk to Marinelli about growing up in Rosemead, Calif., about coaching under John Robinson at USC (1995) and under Tony Dungy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996 through 2001) and he tells you less about the offensive mind of the first and the defensive mind of the second and focuses on the men, their messages, their methods. So, little wonder with this Dallas defense that Marinelli is coaching the man first and the player second. That he believes helping to develop a good man is how you get "a heck of a player."

Teach, teach, teach. Develop, develop, develop.

He's a quality coach.

It won't take long for the some of the fans to turn on him. Then we can add him to the list of other coaches we would want to get rid of.

I have always liked his addition, but I am doubtful about how others will perceive him when the team runs into a rough patch.

On one hand I want to give Marinelli a lot of credit, on the other hand a lot of credit should go to the front office, that moved away from injury ridden veterans, and brought in McClain.

With all that being said, I think it is too early to give credit to anyone, this defense hasn't arrived yet, and it won't until it can get more pressure on QBs. I hope the reinforcements help accomplish that.

I think the defensive coordinator has arrived already. Not being able to give Rod credit is ludicrous.

If you attend coaching theory clinics and then overlay them with how Rod has conducted clinics and what is happening with these young players it is easy to dispense with the platitudes.

This is how you coach and he has it right. There is no guarantee on winning the game. That is just ******** fan talk. There is no easy wins. Coaches don't focus on that. The owners, media and fans do. But that is why they are not coaches. They couldn't hold a jock strap to the challenge of taking (11) different men and making them work as one.

Most would just "Madden" their way to an answer by acquiring what they feel is "talented" players. Well we all saw what talent does when you have Feces for coaching. Think 2007 and that sad sack of quitters.

Wade Phillips is a quality defensive coordinator who is more suited in calling defensive calls, but there is no way in hell he should be allowed anywhere near the practice field or in charge of developing young men.

For those who don't get what Rod is all about its not football he is coaching. He has revealed his secret more than once. its something he has developed over 40 years ago when he was still coaching in HS and it works even in today's NFL.

The peanut gallery always carries the mentality of the mob and reduces itself to the lowest common denominator. Me, I name them idiots and call it quits.

Some fans "turned" on him before he was even made DC.

And they still make snide posts belittling the guy.

I look at the shatty job Rob Ryan is doing and at this point I'll take the guy coaching the defense for Dallas.

The defense is my favorite part of the team this year. They will make mistakes and help to win games.

The offense is looking real good, and hopefully, they can compliment each other while the special team is working.

It looks like the perfect storm to me.

I just love Rod's approach during games. No one is more fiery.

Swear words are flying and he's angry about execution on schemes, but you never see him chasing down an individual player. he's putting it all down on the field the way it is suppose to be done and when the mics are on him he's as calm as can be.

That to me is modeling winning behavior. I remember a particular time when McBriar was pursued by Parcells and he yelled at Mat and called him stupid for a bad punt. Mat is not stupid. The punt was bad, but that is football. Chasing down players on the sidelines does not equate to performance.

Bill crossed a line and oddly enough when Bill left there were not very many who were unhappy. He was a bridge burner. A Mike Keenan or a Bobby Knight of his sport.

Standing by players and getting into the play of the game and then patting them on the back as they cross the sidelines is building bridges.

I still believe that Marinelli was the cherry on the cake when they made a play for Kiffin. Lovie was going out and I wonder in my mind if they had strategy to go after Rod at the time they signed Monte.

Love Rod, love Kiffin. Good things happening on the team not related to wins and losses.

It's one of those things that some of us wonders if this is real or a fluke. We keep waiting for them to completely suck, and they just won't.

there diffidently were some unfair comments made about Marinelli.Particularly his last place defense last year.
I think being 'fair' would solve a lot of future problems on this board.
