Melvin Gordon: It'd be "Sweet" to Run Behind Cowboys O-Line

According to a recent report by Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon will never make it to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 27 in the upcoming NFL Draft. This is because the Baltimore Ravens hold the 26th pick, and have every intention of taking the reigning Doak Walker Award winner if he’s there.

But if the report turns out to be wrong, or something changes, Gordon would be more than happy for the chance to run behind the Cowboys’ vaunted young offensive line. And why wouldn’t he? The group is young, strong and talented--and for what it’s worth, Gordon is already very familiar with center Travis Frederick, a teammate of his at Wisconsin for two seasons.

It would be sweet to run behind that line,” Gordon said, per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That line is strong and smart. I saw Travis on my visit. It would be great. But I’m just excited to see where my next family is going to be.”

Hey Melvin... could you do something stupid so you will fall those extra 5 spots to us. Right now I just can't see you getting past the Lions and Cards... but when Dez did something stupid it worked perfectly (granted we still had to trade up, but just 4 spots, not 20 spots like we probably would have had too). Don't hurt anyone, but make sure it is stupid enough that you will fall a bit farther lol.

Ravens need a CB badly, not saying they wont pick up Gordon but they ran out of CBs last year

Gordon would be the odds on favorite for ROTY in Dallas. It's hard not to want that on the team. I wonder how much it would take to trade up 3-5 spots to jump over the Ravens. Probably too much. But if you could spend a 1st and 4th to get a guy that is most likely to be voted the best player on offense for his class, is that worth it? I think you have to take that deal, though many would probably hate it.

Not really worried about the Ravens... but between the Cards and Lions... at least 1 will draft a RB. If Gurley makes it to 23 Gordon might make it to 27... but I just don't see it happening. I think if we want Gordon or Gurley we will have to make a Dez Bryant type trade and move up 5 or so spots.

To get Bryant back in 2010 it cost us a 3rd and we got back a 4th (which we then traded to move up and grab Lee). I would totally be willing to make that deal again.

what we need is the Cards to trade for AD,that will almost ensure either Gordon or Gurley will drop to us.

The problem I have is not with the value for the RB (though I wouldn't consider trading up unless I got a lower pick back to offset any move). The issue for me would be the opportunity cost of not addressing the defense again. As good as Gordon may be, there'll be an equivalent defender there, and that's the better get for this team right now.

And let's face it: whichever back we end up taking in the first half of the draft is going to be a candidate for the best RB chosen by anyone by the end of the season. With our OL and our passing game, that RB job is one of the best in all of football, and it's wide open.

I totally forgot Melvin and Travis were teammates. Wonder if he's been telling the coaches about his previous time together

The trade chart shows the Cowboys 1st and 3rd is close to enough to bring back 21 or 22 and a 4th. One of Gordon or Gurley will almost assuredly be there at those picks, so I wouldn't be surprised nor upset if we make that move. If Gurley drops past SD, I would almost expect a move up for him. It really doesn't hurt that much if you still get a 4th back.

If you look at it in terms of # of snaps played, I think Gordon would have more snaps than anyone we'd chose on defense in 2015. Otherwise, let's think of the different options on defense. At defensive end, if you think Hardy is just a one year mercenary, then obviously DE becomes a huge need, but at least for 2015 a DE in the first is going to be largely a rotational guy. A corner in the first might win a starting position, but only if you assume we cut Carr. A 1-tech would be an immediate starter and upgrade, but the only guy really mentioned for that position probably isn't on the field for over half the snaps when we're in nickel. There aren't really any safeties thought of as good value picks at 27, but a trade down could result in a good FS.

One thing I'm thinking about is that, while spending a first on a RB is almost against my religion at this point, this pick would essentially guaranty that we can go 5 more seasons not using salary cap space at the position. We could churn cheap players behind Gordon and then just see where things are at in 2020.

Do what QBs do and just say, "Sorry, not playing here!",
and get yo booty to Dallas!
