Dan Marino delivered his sharpest criticism of the Dolphins in memory Wednesday, questioning the team's coaching and calling this season ''embarrassing'' to the franchise.
On HBO's Inside the NFL, Marino said the fact the Dolphins have been outscored 68-3 in the third quarter ``tells you maybe it is the coaching or something with the staff.''
Marino added, ``They'll have to take a serious look at changing everything.''
Of owner Wayne Huizenga, Marino said, ''If there's a fault [with Huizenga], maybe he's too nice a guy'' because he gave Dave Wannstedt a two-year contract extension after last season.
While Marino said the Dolphins need to play quarterback A.J. Feeley the rest of the season, his HBO colleague, ex-Dolphins receiver Cris Carter, disagreed and said Feeley will not succeed in the Dolphins' offensive system.
''That offensive system is terrible,'' Carter said. ``. . . That system is awful. It will make [even] Dan Marino look average.''
Responded Marino: ``That's hard to do.''
Carter also said he was surprised Wannstedt was retained after last season and criticized the Dolphins' offensive line, including how the unit responds to blitzes.
Collinsworth pointed to the loss of offensive coordinator Norv Turner as a key factor in Wannstedt's demise.
Turner now coaches the Oakland Raiders. And Bob Costas suggested for his next job, Wannstedt could become Ricky Williams' travel agent.
Before Wednesday, Marino had been guarded in his criticism of the Dolphins since retiring. He had been especially diplomatic since Feb. 3, when he resigned as a team executive after 22 days on the job.
The HBO program replays at 8 and midnight tonight and 7 p.m. Friday.
