Please for someone who understands the rules or cap better I'd like to have a discussion on Micah Parsons leverage here.
We always bash the FO for not using their own leverage. They actually do, did so with Dak on a FT and got forced into a corner to pay him when realizing how bad the team was without a "mediocre" QB.
Now with Micah - what is his leverage? If he holds out, he can only do so until Week 10. Otherwise the team will have another year tacked onto his 5 year 1st round contract.
- Holding out until Week 10 only damages Micah's brand. Sure another team might still want to take him on due to his elite skill level - but with players like Abdul Carter coming into the NFL with fresh blood every year - who wants this headache? In my eyes this does nothing other than lowering his podcast views and damaging his own personal brand. People watch his stuff to comment on the post-game - not because he is some top tier analyst breaking down film
- Micah is under contract, he has no leverage if he holds out this year
- Micah can be FT next year, leaving him with zero leverage going forward - if he doesn't sign the tag, we still gained a year on his contract from a potential hold out this year. If that doesn't happen and he doesn't sign the tag - he'll waste another year of his career
- A second FT can be given after 2 full-seasons from now. Micah will be 3 years removed from this point. He likely will have gotten 60M GTD, but he is risking having his long-term security and deal washed from an injury.
What leverage does Micah have right now? None, he can request a trade, he can also spew all over twitter. When it comes to his contract leverage, as a business man myself I can tell you from everything I researched Jerry Jones has all of the leverage in his hands at the moment, that is why he is not pressed to sign this player. Micah has to report by Week 10 to continue this and even then, will be likely FT. All he will do is establish himself as a headache in the NFL - look how this went for Hassan Reddick.
Going to another team is no guarantee - all fans want to believe this will be SF or the Eagles but the chances of the Cowboys trading him to an in-division rival or conference rival is extremely low. I'd take less picks and ship him off to a lower tier team at that point. He has no say into where he can go or how that team will handle his contract negotiations. This isn't a sign-and-trade event like the NBA. This is a Trey Hendrickson event where you can see the team has every single piece of leverage there is.
Micah is the best player on the team, but at this time JJ is using what is called leverage in contract negotiations to show Micah that he has zero options than to report and be a leader. Trevon Diggs and Micah can tweet all they want.
