I remember vividly the "Emmitt Smith/Barry Sanders" vocabulary a decade ago.

"Oh, if Barry Sanders played behind THAT offensive line.........."
"Oh, if Barry Sanders had an Aikman at QB................"
"Oh, if Barry Sanders played on a team with weapons like Irvin or Novecheck.."
"The only reason that Emmitt has ANY NUMBERS is because of the other weapons at Troy's disposal............"

Anything and everything to NOT give Emmitt ANY cred whatsoever. Did it ever occur that EMMITT SMITH, because of his greatness, opened up the passing attack back then???

To say that Tomlin ain't a good coach, "put him on a mediocre team", "it's his staff and not HIM", blah, blah, blah...............

For one thing, you'll never know or be able to prove it, so it's a hallow argument that'll never be settled. Bottom line, is that he's presiding over a damn good team on a damn good run. He's several years removed from the Cowher days, so at what point do you give him his props??

I remember, when Switzer won a SB TWO YEARS removed from Jimmy Johnson, no one gave him credit. It was all "Jimmy's guys" and that bumbling hillbilly Switzer was just minding the shop.

However, George Seifert won a SB ONE YEAR removed from the "genius" Bill Walsh, and he was heralded as the "next West Coast Offense" guru-genius, and how wonderful the Niner organization was for being so savvy and smart and making the "brilliant" Seifert the next HC.

Switzer=Two years removed. Seifert=One year removed. And two VASTLY different takes...............and unfair takes at that.

It's all about bias and perception. It's what you wanna' think beforehand, going in, that determines your opinion. If you don't like Tomlin's hair-cut (something along those rediculous lines were said), or don't like black HC's, or whatever, then you're gonna' diss what he's done in Pittsburgh................

I'd take him over Wade in a nano-second.

it's sad when tomlin makes your own HC look bad.

tomlins a pretty bad HC (take away his DC and they'd be lost). gameday mistakes galore. but he has total backing of the owners/GM and players know he's not going anywhere.

put him on a mediocre team and his expiration date would be coming up.
So why isn't his D'Coordinator the head coach? I'd take that bad coach if it meant winning.

I can't stand Tomlin but he has the right mindset for a HC. his actions suggest otherwise like chest bumping big ben during games and what not. but he has the right mind set. let's compare

Tomlin's mindset: I coach and you do what I tell you to do.

Wade's mindset: we're family and if you make mistakes I'll take the blame

Wade is correct in saying it! He cannot lead, so the team fails through his inept leadership. What is so wrong in what he says?

What gets me about WP is that he always feels the need to mention his "stats".

Enough about the stats in your career....and your stats as far as playoffs go is pretty pitiful.

He cares too much about what other people think....he needs to be more of a LEADER, but you can't really change this late in life.

Mike Tomlin had the right response. If Wade Phillips wouldn't have said anything or taken no responsibility in the media, you guys would be hammering him, regardless.

Mike Tomlin had Dick LeBeu as his top assistant.

Wade Philips had Jason Garrett, a guy who just finished his first year with full control of the offense.

Mike Tomlin didn't have a $ 3 million dollar offensive coordinator/ "next head coach" on his staff, and he didn't have to coach iOwens and have him poisoning his locker room. Afterall, Owens' is Jerry's pet. Not many other coaches would put up with him on their team.

Wade Phillips' biggest mistake was not taking complete charge of the defense or relinquishing control to the inexperienced Brian Stewart.

I heard John Fox, after his 12-4 team got bounced out of the playoffs by a team they had already posted a win against this year, say things like this in the post-game press conference:

We went 12-4, won the division and made the playoffs.

Only one team is going to win it.

Every other team will be just like us, disappointed.

If Wade Phillips said this, he would be raked over the coals.

As he should be.

And I don't give a crap about John Fox and the Panthers. I care about the Cowboys. Just cuz those other teams are ok with an underachieving coach/team doesn't mean the cowboys and their fans should lower their standards.

way off tangent.

tomlin is a bottom-10 coach

regardless of Pitt's record.

sorry.

but you give wade tomlin's authority & franchise coach tag and he'll do better too.

front office support makes bad coaches better & gives them authority over players. even superstars.

jerry just doesn't get it.

Wade doesn't have the personality to take that authority. I agree with the above post about how boring these 'take away his____ and he would suck, etc, etc....'

That sums it up perfectly. I couldn't have said it better.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the game right now. He knows how to get the most out of his players.. Going into the season the Steelers arguebly had the toughest schedule but not only did they make the playoffs their the #1 seed. The only #1 seed to make it to the second rd. The guys a motivator and a leader of men, give the guy his due and this is coming from a guy who hates the Steelers.

At some point, you have to get sick of these "Take away X, and Y would be awful."

Take away Jerry Rice and Joe Montana becomes average.
Take away Emmitt's offensive line, and he wouldn't have been great.
Take away Marvin Harrison, and Peyton wouldn't be who he is.
Take away the running game, and Eli Manning would be Just Another Guy.

And on and on and on it goes.

Look, no one player does anything without the help of others, especially in a team sport.

Even so, it's what they do with the talent, as many talented teams go no where without all the pieces together.

Knocking Tomlin is silly. He's the coach. This same Steelers team bowed out in the playoffs last year.

This year they're playing in the AFC Championship.

That says something about his heading coach abilities.

Just because you say it doesn't make it so. Every Steeler fan I know(and I know alot of them) they love this guy. I understand you have an agenda with the guy but if you know any Steelers fan that are unhappy with this guy, they have no idea what a good coach is and they don't deserve him, they deserve Phillips.

Yup....I don't know how anyone can say Tomlin is a bottom third NFL coach. If he is, than I would trade him for our bottom third NFL coach anyday of the week.

my image of Wade versus Tomlin is during the game this year...

Wade wearing the big puffy jacket looking like an idiot.

While Tomlin had a sweat shirt and his coat unbuttoned worrying about the game and not acting like a wuss about the cold...

That says it all to me.

I got one for you, make Wade Phillips the head coach of the Steelers and I gurantee you they don't win a Playoff game.
